[mukto-mona] Re: Fw: Shame for Bangladesh--New Ambassador Ziauddin Presented His Credential To A State Dept Official--Not To The President

The Bangladesh Embassy in Washington DC earlier responded to some confusions created and spread by certain quarters with regard to presentation of credentials by H.E. Mohammad Ziauddin, the new Bangladesh Ambassador to US.

Yesterday, on 18 September 2014, Ambassador Ziaudin formally presented credentials to none other than the US President H.E. Barack Obama at a ceremony held at Oval Office in the White House. The event received extensive coverage by media. Here is a link to the Daily Star's relevant news item published on its front page today:

Wishing you all the best,

Obviously, any public servant of Bangladesh can defend his or her government with justification, but that doesn't mean people have to believe that statement. In this matter, media reports and photo tells why and what took place.

Supported by media reports the picture clearly shows and evidences that Mr. Mohammed Ziauddin presented his credential as Ambassador of Bangladesh to a state department official of Assistant Secretary level in a ceremony and in present of other officials, not mere "presentation of the copies."

However, let us wait for the future report(s) as stated by the Bangladesh government official.

Respected sir,

Hope this finds you well.

The Bangladesh Embassy in DC is taken aback by the confusion over the recent presentation of copies of credential papers by Ambassador M Ziauddin to the US CP Ambassador Peter Selfridge. The US system allows a newly arrived Ambassador to become functional (in their term "Appointed Ambassador") with the presentation of copies of the credentials to the Chief of Protocol (which is indeed a smart practice). As a very special gesture of friendship and goodwill, the US State Department arranged this event on 14 August 2014, right after the arrival of Ambassador Ziauddin in DC on 12th. Accordingly, the Embassy issued a Press Release which received wide media coverage in Dhaka. In the Press Release the Embassy was meticulous in mentioning that this was a presentation of the copies of the credentials and the ceremonial presentation of the credentials to President Obama would take place soon - which were correctly reflected in the media reports (even in the the report, in Bangla, forwarded in Ambassdor Faruk Chodhury's mail - where they used the word 'anulipi' ). Here are the relevant parts (cut-pasted) of the Embassy's Press Release which was issued after the event:

PRESS RELEASE

New Bangladesh Ambassador presents copies of credentials

The newly appointed Ambassador of Bangladesh to the USA Mr. Mohammad Ziauddin presented copies of his credentials to the US Chief of Protocol Ambassador Peter A. Selfridge at a ceremony held at the Department of State today. Ambassador Selfridge congratulated Ambassador Mohammad Ziauddin on becoming, with the presentation of credentials, an 'Appointed Ambassador'.

The ceremonial presentation of credentials to US President Obama by Ambassador Ziauddin is expected to take place soon.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We are now awaiting the date of ceremonial presentation of credentials to President Obama which would take place in the White House. We are in touch with the State Department on this and we are expecting that the event would take place shortly which would be disseminated for media consumption by the US side as well as by this Embassy.

Hope this clarifies the matter.

With salam,

Muhith
