Re: [mukto-mona] Re: Fw: লতিফ সিদ্দিকীক ে মন্ত্রী সভা থেক ে অব্যাহতি !!!!!

The chorus of condemnation of Latif Siddiqui (LS) for raising a legitimate question about Hajj is reverberating across the continents. The first victim is obviously the person who ventured to go out of the box. But the main victim is the freedom of speech in Bangladesh. What LS had said is extremely sensible - what is the justification of spending life long savings of a person in performing Hajj which confers no benefit at all, other than the fictitious promise of very good returns in the after-life? If someone thinks it is politically incorrect or insulting to some people, one should say so and counter LS's argument. But what do Bangladeshis do? Like hyenas they go and attack verbally or threaten to attack physically the person who has raised the legitimate question. It is very sad indeed. It is this attitude which is the biggest impediment to democracy in Bangladesh.

Are you saying Latif Siddiqui should not have expressed his views, because illiterate ignorant people will not like it? If that's the case – there is no hope for progress; we are stuck in the past.
I remember – we had a civil discourse about Hajj, a year or so back, in this forum. We discussed about this multi-billion dollar business in Saudi Arabia, where many people spend their life-savings.
The main problem with this discourse is - now politicians are involved. BNP/Jamat wants to score political points against Awami League. They have found one. When politicians get involved in a discourse, you can rest assure – it will end in turmoil.

It was really foolish for him to get into this nonsense knowing fully Bangladeshi Muslim sentiment. 50% people can't even read and write and you start criticizing Haj, prophet and Saudis? What could be more explosive than that? That man's life is in deep danger like Nasreen and Salman Rushdhi. Watch a full mea culpa from this man.

Bangladesh is a political jungle, where politicians are animals, looking prays. They will grab anything and everything, when they are hungry. Even though this is a non-issue, they will bite it, because they are hungry.

Mr. Latif Siddiqui expressed his views, which many may not be shared by majority. So what? Let's say - he is wrong. He will be a sinner; let him face Allah. Why are you fighting with police, and putting your life on the line for his sin?

It's really sad to see the level of ignorance of some people in Bangladesh; they are ready to come to the street and fight with police; some are ready to give life for something he said, if need be. It's heart-breaking to see that - lives are so cheap in Bangladesh.
