হিন্দু ছুটির দাবীতে কমিশনারের সাথে বৈঠক
নিউইয়র্ক সিটির বেশ ক'টি হিন্দু সংগঠনের নেতৃবৃন্দ শুক্রবার দুপুরে সিটি কম্যুনিটি এফেয়ার্স কমিশনার মার্কো এ. ক্যারন-এর সাথে সাক্ষাত করেন। এক ঘন্টার ওপর এ বৈঠকে সিটি স্কুলে হিন্দু ছুটির দাবীতে নেতৃবৃন্দ বিভিন্ন যুক্তি তুলে ধরেন। কুইন্স কম্যুনিটি ডিরেক্টর হেলেন হো এসময় উপস্থিত ছিলেন। প্রতিনিধি দলে নেত্রিত্ব দেন শিতাংশু গুহ এবং অন্যদের মধ্যে উপস্থিত ছিলেন: ভিনসেন্ট ব্রুনো; নিশা রামচরন; রুভেন গত্টিলেভ; নরেন্দ্র রামদুলা; ভিরেশ রামনারায়ণ; মোহিনী সারিন; নারায়ণ কাটারিয়া; আরিশ সাহানী; লিডিয়া রামচা এবং বাংলাদেশী কমিউনিটির মধ্যে ব্রন্সের প্রদীপ মালাকার ও তপণ সেন; ব্রুকলীনের অজিত ভৌমিক; সুশীল সাহা, শুভ রায় প্রমুখ। যেসব সংগঠন অংশ নেয়: আমেরিকান হিন্দু কাউন্সিল; ঐক্য পরিষদ; জাস্টিস ফর হিন্দুস; হিন্দু স্টুডেন্টস এসোসিয়েশন ইন্টারন্যাশনাল; ইন্ডিয়ান-মার্কিন ইন্টেলেক্ট ফোরাম; ফ্লাসিং হিন্দু (গনেশ) টেম্পল; শ্রীকৃষ্ণ ভক্ত সংঘ; রাধামাধভ মন্দির; হিন্দু লার্নিং ফাউণ্ডেশন সহ আরো কিছু প্রতিষ্ঠান। উল্লেখ্য ডেলিগেশন সংখ্যা সীমিত থাকায় অন্য কমিউনিটির ওপর জোর দেয়া হয়। নেতৃবৃন্দ দেওয়ালী, জন্মাষ্টমী, দশেরা ও হলি'র জন্যে ছুটির দাবি জানান। কমিশনার ও কুইন্স ডিরেক্টর জানান, এ দাবীর জন্যে এখন বেশ কিছু এডভোকেসী গ্রুপ কাজ করছে। কমিশনার বলেন, দাবি যখন সোচ্চার হচ্ছে, তখন প্রক্রিয়ার মধ্যে একদিন হয়তো দাবি মিটবেও। তবে এজন্যে কাজ করে যেতে হবে। তাকে প্রশ্ন করা হয় তিনি এদাবীর সমর্থন করেন কিনা? তিনি বলেন, আমরা যদি এ দাবীর বিরোধী হতাম তাহলে তো আপনাদের সাথে বসতাম না, কমিউনিটির মতামত যর্থার্থ স্থানে পৌছে দেয়াই আমাদের কাজ। এ পর্যায়ে তাকে ১০ই এপ্রিলের সমাবেশের কথা জানালে তিনি জানান সমাবেশ সম্পর্কে তারা অবহিত আছেন। বৈঠক শেষে নেতৃবৃন্দ মত প্রকাশ করেন যে, হিন্দু ছুটি পেতে আরো কাজ করতে হবে, তবে ১০ই এপ্রিলের সমাবেশের ফলে সিটি হলে বরফ গলতে শুরু করেছে।

A delegation of different Hindu Organizations met with the Commissioner, Community Affairs Unit Mr. Marco A. Carrion on Friday, April 24, 2015 at his office. The meeting continues more than an hour in a very congenial atmosphere. Mr. Carrion was assisted by Ms. Halen Ho, Director of Queens Community Affairs Unit. The delegation handed over a few documents supporting Hindu Holidays in NYC schools (attached).
Thanking the commissioner Sitangshu Guha, leader of the delegation told that, NYC is a great diversified city, which should reflect in in NYC school calendar. He added, recently Mayor had declared 2 holidays, but he had forgotten us, we felt discriminated. We are 1 in 16 in NY and Hindu voice counts too. Other speakers demanded that, Diwali, Holly, 'Janmastami' , & Dussera should be added to school calendar as holidays in NYC schools. Almost everybody talked friendly and everybody echoed each others voice. They told, Hindu holidays are traditionally marked by various cultural festivities and spiritual retreats that promote and celebrate human excellence. Hinduism propagates self-awareness and fosters tolerance, healing, and peaceful coexistence. Hinduism asserts that everyone is divine. Hinduism is the third largest religion in the world.
Speakers also added that, NYC is home to about 1 million Hindus who are the immigrants from India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Bhutan, Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, Afghanistan, the Caribbean (Trinidad, Guyana, Suriname), Fiji, South Africa and African continent, and other countries; and their descendants, followed by the thousands of American adherents of the ISKCON movement (the Hare Krishna group). They told, Hindus are a very vibrant community and part of the fabrics that made New York the greatest city in the world. Study shows, Hindu-Americans hold the highest education levels and household income among all religious communities in the U.S. Many concepts of Hinduism such as the law of karma, reincarnation, yoga, and meditation have become part of American mainstream.
