Ziaur Rahman survived as many as 21 coup attempts during his five years as leader of the country until he was killed by the coup of 1981. Most of those coups were led by the 1971 freedom-fighter officers who were irked by Ziaur's liaison with anti-liberation pro-Islamic quarters. 30 September 1977 a coup was held in Bogura Cantonment. 22 East Bengal Regiment participated in this coup. But it failed.
2 October 1977 another coup erupted, led by the airmen of Bangladesh Air Force. Six Air Force officers died in this coup. No one knows why this coup was begun. Witness says that in 2 October five members of the "Red Army" of Japan were trying to hijack a Japan Airline DC-8, including 156 passengers. But they failed in the attempt. Following this, the coup was begun. An estimated 2500 armed forces personnel were executed following convictions in courts martial for their part in the coup. Officially 1183 soldiers were convicted. 561 were Bangladesh Air Force airmen and rest were Army soldiers. Army soldiers were killed for 30 September coup.

তিনি আরও লিখেছেন, 'তবে এখানেই এর ইতি ঘটেনি। অভ্যুত্থানে যারা অংশ নিয়েছিল, জিয়া তাদের বিরুদ্ধে ত্বরিত এবং নির্দয় ব্যবস্থা গ্রহণ করেছিলেন। নির্ভরযোগ্য সূত্রে জানানো হয়েছে, ৪৮৮ জন সেনা কর্মকর্তার সংক্ষিপ্ত বিচার করা হয়েছিল এবং তাদের হয় গুলি করে, নয়তো ফাঁসি দিয়ে মৃত্যুদণ্ড দেওয়া হয়েছিল; প্রায় ৫০০ জন কর্মস্থলে ফিরে আসেনি বা ভয়ে কর্মস্থল ত্যাগ করেছিল। আরও সহস্রাধিক লোককে চাকরিচ্যুত করা হয়েছিল। .........................................বিএনপির নেতৃত্ব কী বলবে, জেনারেল জিয়াউর রহমানকে কালিমালিপ্ত করতে ব্যারিস্টার মওদুদকেও ভাড়া করা হয়েছে? মওদুদ ১৯৯৫ সালে যখন তাঁর বইটি প্রকাশ করেন, তখন বিএনপি ক্ষমতায় ছিল।
সামরিক শাসক জিয়াউর রহমান ১৯৭৭ এ নাটকের মাধ্যমে বিচারের নামে ১১ জন কর্মকর্তাসহ এক হাজার ৪৫০ জন বিমানসেনাকে ফাঁসি দেন।

Lawrence Lifschultz, a left oriented journalist, dedicated almost his whole book (Bangladesh: The Unfinished Revolution) on Colonel Taher, his ultra leftist ideological mind and a political vision of classless society. He blamed General Ziaur Rahman for the trial and execution of Taher. Obviously, one cannot expect anything good of Zia in his book.
About the August 15 coup and Sheikh Mujibur Rahman he says: "The reaction in Bangladesh...was not of a vast popular fury against the coup makers. After shouting "Who the hell this Larry Lifschultz . . ." then asking the audience to read the book by Larry Lifschultz. The Comic does not like what Larry has to say about Zia, but he wants us to read what he has to say about Sheikh Mujib.
In those dark dark days of Jahiliya, when the monster Zia gobbled power and began গmurdering everyone in sight domestic media were gagged. Larry Lifschultz was one of the few foreign journalists who were around to cover the events in Dhaka. He wanted to check certain background details in his story and met me in London on his way back from his post in Hong kong to U S A.
