Applications are invited for a PhD studentship in the Electrical and
Computer Engineering at the
University of Memphis. The project
involves development of methods in the broad areas of understanding
non-verbal communication and developing perceptual user interface
(detection, tracking, co-analysis of multimodal signals, design and
development fully functional perceptual interfaces and usability
study). The candidate should possess sound mathematical background,
good programming skills (C++/Matlab/R) as well as good writing
ability.

CVPIA is a dynamic and growing research laboratory. The main thrust
of the lab is conducting cutting edge research in the general areas
of bio-informatics/computational biology, computer vision, data
mining, pattern recognition, and human computer interfaces (HCI).
The common underlying theme is to address research issues that would
allow robust analysis and modeling of all possible types of signals
(text, speech, images, video, time series and gene expressions
etc.). Major motivations of the research includes (but not limited
to): (i) integration of hardware and software for perceptual human-
machine interfaces and mobility assistance for blind people, (ii)
knowledge discovery from microarrays and literature mining for
bioinformatics, (iii) sensor networks for monitoring trails of drug
smugglers, (iv) image analysis for biomedical applications (gait
analysis, medical informatics and modeling and evaluation of
surgical skill) and (v) computer vision solution for robust analysis
of human motion for creating articulated models, behavior-based
biometrics, continuous gesture recognition, emotion recognition and
facial image analysis. Details about the group and project can be
