[ALOCHONA] Digital Bangladesh

HABIBUR Rashid Ismail would have us believe that the government is making reasonable progress with Digital Bangladesh (New Age, November 11). Certainly, we must all play our part. But the notion that the government is even close to being on track for a digital Bangladesh is disingenuous.
The measure of a Digital Bangladesh starts first and foremost with the progress of e-government. With the exception of the finance ministry's brave and welcome efforts at bringing tax payment online there is little evidence of a concerted effort to bring about a Digital Bangladesh. It is a slogan only. Buying railway tickets and registering for exams online is a tiny fraction of the easiest part of digitising Bangladesh. We need to see national strategies, investments and policies that accelerate our progress into the digital age. We are nowhere close. For now digital Bangladesh means that Photoshop is used widely on standalone computers.
