Re: [mukto-mona] FW: THE PARTITION AND TODAY'S PAKISTAN

About reunification Nehru said, "I don't want a carbuncle on my butt."  We all know what Napoleon did to himself and France.

"Impossible is a word to be found only in the dictionary of fools", so said Napoleon Bonaparte. I agree with it to a large extent, not completely. As for the re-unification of the Indian sub-continent, I do not think it is impossible. However, I also do not think that much good will come out of a re-unification unless and until most of the population of the three countries is ready. And I do not see that happening in decades, it might happen in a number of centuries.

I do not give much value to the statements of demagogues like Bhutto. He preferred his own personal power over keeping Pakistan united. To me, he was the principal villain for the break-up of Pakistan in 1971. He had a significant popular mandate in Pakistan ; yet he conspired with the military to deny the absolute majority mandate holders their due role in the country. How could a criminal like that genuinely envision a better destiny for the greater sub-continent?

To me, not only re-unification, just peace between India and Pakistan is a far cry. There can be no real friendship between two countries while one teaches its school children, through regular school curricula, hatred against the majority population of the other country.

Unification would be too much to ask for right now although that does not seem to be an impossible proposition given the fact that all these countries in the subcontinent share a common legacy. In sixties Bhutto (had already left Ayub Khan and was an aspiring leader of Pakistan) during his visit to the then East Pakistan told the prominent East Pakistani student leaders that solution of the Kashmir problem would be possible only under an Indian confederation. Very bold idea indeed! The idea is thought provoking.
