[ALOCHONA] FW: Deliberately distorting secularism by Arshad Mahood

A message from Pakistani secularists who are dedicated Muslims, and are deeply disturbed by religion's abuse and mis-use in politically motivated anti-people activities that are making their everyday life miserable.

It is a shame that Mr. S. A. Hannan of Bangladesh, a Jamaati honcho, who claims to have derived his moral bearing from the guidance of the Holy Qur'an is one the most consistent liars of the realm. (The Qur'an has strict interdiction against such double-speaking sinners who cite the scripture to cover and hide their sins).  We should all react vehemently against his attempts to distort the meaning of 'secularism' by diabolical lies and outdated theories.

Please read Arshad Mahmood's essay. Coming from Pakistan, it should give us Bangladeshis renewed vigour to fight for secularism which was at the heart of our 1971 Muktijuddho.

There has been deliberate distortion of the word secularism as anti religion. The common philosophy now practiced in western countries and also in some Arab countries is separation of religion from the state or state matters. In Pakistan itself when the great Liar and exploiter of Islam, Zia Ul Haq fooled the masses and the Mullahs that he is establishing Islamic Nizam, this gave rise to religiosity and extremism resulting in exploitation of Islam, deviations, religious groupings, sectarianism, killings etc. The Shias were not satisfied with his Sunni Sharia imposition through Hudood and other laws and had to be amended accordingly into two sectarian Islam.  Quaide Azam was right when he said that Pakistan will not be religious state so that all sects of Islam and the minorities live peacefully with no hatred against each other and work together for the peace and progress of Pakistan. As such there was peace and friendship among all sects and minorities in the then liberal Pakistan till 1977.

It is time for our sincere leaders to take a bold stand to end all sort of religious exploitations, extremism, killings, suicide bombings, sectarianism, discrimination against minorities etc. A Islam is a state subject hence all the religious parties and groupings  be banned as they are dividing our nation and promoting extremism and all Masajid and Madressahs be nationalised for better and liberal management by the government. The other sects and minorities be allowed to manage their own institutions privately. This step will bring much needed peace on the religious front. Thanks.

Nice to read this message. It shows there are elements among the Pakistani intelligentsia who are introspecting and re-evaluating certain thoughts and trends and practices.

By no means does secularism mean "anti-religious or atheism". It simply means separation of religion and the state and further dictates that state keeps its hands off religion as much as possible and definitely does not make the state anti-religious.

While Jinnah had a secular and democratic state in mind, Pakistan went 180 degrees in the opposite direction
especially when it assumed the name "Islamic Republic of Pakistan". Jinnah whom the Pakistanis call Qaid- e-Azam must have turned in his grave that day. All his dreams were dashed. Pakistan never became a democracy and nor a secular state.

Now it may be too late to set the clock back. But one thing is sure, it did not do Pakistan any good.

God Bless the masses of Pakistan who think their Allah will bring them the harmony, prosperity or the maturity of modernity -which the Mullahs abhor anyways.
