Govts failed to protect HR workers, journos: AI
Amnesty International (AI) on Thursday observed that the failure of
successive governments in protecting human rights defenders, including
journalists, has prevented the improvement of human rights situation
in Bangladesh.
The observation was disclosed in a joint press meet by AI and Odhikar,
a rights group, at the national Press Club in the capital.
"The successive governments in Bangladesh have failed to defend the
human rights defenders, despite the fact that it is the duty of the
government," he said.
"Both the present AL-led and the previous BNP-led governments have
failed to keep their promises made to AI over bringing the killers of
eight journalists, including Manik Saha and Balu, murdered between
2000 and 2005, to justice," he added.
AI also notes that the failure of successive governments is also
hindering empowerment of women in the country.
The conference was to protest alleged harassment of an Odhikar
activist, Shampa Goswami, of Satkhira on October 23.
