Well, what is not being realized here is, Domestic Politics of Great Britain. Socialist Labor Party had come in power and it had wanted to get rid of all British Colonies since Great Britain was not earning anything from them. The Ruling British Class in Colonies had become patriotic to those Colonies instead remaining patriotic to Great Britain especially in case of Indian Sub Continent because most of them were not only born in the Sub Continent but even their grandparents were born there. Some were 16th generation of British. This is why they were giving no slacks to to the Empire and were charging for everything. This why India was only 2nd behind USA in Foreign Exchange Reserves, when IMF was formed by UNO in 1944.
Their patriotism showed in infrastructural advancement and following was the Evidence:

1. Everything invented in the West was immediately imported or introduced or built or replicated in British India.
2. London Tube (underground Railway) was finished in 1856, Indian Railway had started before that.
3. Railway was invented in USA but by 1890, rich India had more Railway Tracks than any other country on earth, not USA despite that poor USA was 3 times bigger land mass than India.
4. Domestic & Industrial Electricity or AC Current was invented by Nikola Tesla and developed by his financier Westinghouse in 1890 in USA. Until 1953, 85% of State of Washington did not have Electricity in poor USA but rich British India had electrified almost whole Sub Continent in 1930.
5. Radio Transmission was invented in USA and rich India had started All India Radio was reaching whole Sub Continent in 1930's right after that while poor USA did not have Radio Stations everywhere.

In India, British had started introduction of Democracy by developing Assemblies in Provinces that were under their Direct Control. Over 600 States run by Kings were not under Direct British Management. Except for a couple of dozen big states almost all of these states were like Dots on map of British India. The Nations that remained under British Flag prospered and the crazy ones, who's leaders had thought they were more educated and advanced than British became poor after they kicked their citizens of British Ancestry out. So, the richest of the Colonies, Sub Continent India became Poverty Stricken also despite all the inheritance of Foreign Exchange Reserves from those so called Indian Born Foreigners.
What caused it?
Bad Management, bad planning, lack of understanding of Economics, lack of understanding of World Monitory System and biggest of them all, Corruption and lack of Discipline. What should crazy Kids have done in their Home, when Parents are gone and never come back besides wrecking their Home?

In 1990, I went to Pakistan and looked. In the old part of cities it looked the way the British had left except for streets had too many holes in them. Nothing looked changed besides imported stuff like Auto Rickshaw and Vehicles. I guess, this is why 'daisee' people of Sub Continent had wanted freedom from British. Why Chinese, freed after World War II from Japan and who became Communist in 1949 are still blaming Japan?
Have not Singapore, China, S Korea, Taiwan become a lot more advance and richer than countries of Sub Continent despite being freed years later than nations of the Sub Continent?
