War crimes trial has driven BNP crazy: Hasina

Sheikh Hasina has reiterated her party's commitment to try suspected war criminals in an address to the party supporters prior to the start of a mass rally.
The prime minister, who heads the Awami League, took the stage around 4:45pm on Wednesday although the pre-procession gathering at the Suhrawardy Udyan had started at 3:30pm.
Seen as a show of strength ahead of BNP's Mar 12 rally, it marked the call for the nation's independence struggle this day in 1971. The nation's founding father Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman had given the call from the then Race Course Ground, now the Shuhrawardy Udyan.
Hasina criticised the BNP-led opposition's movement against her coalition government. "They (BNP) have gone crazy following the start of trial of the war criminals."
"Does the call for movement aim to save the war criminals?" she asked.
"You (BNP) cannot save war criminals. The trial will be held on the soil of the Bangladesh," she reiterated.
The procession kicked off soon after Hasina delivered her speech but she did not join it. It ended at the Bangabandhu Museum at Dhamnondi-32 after the supporters marched down Elephant Road and Kalabagan.
Commuters were hit with huge traffic tailbacks on Dhaka streets. Their woes worsened by inadequate number of city buses as many of them had been hired for the programme.
According to authorities, the roads connecting the Shuhrawardi Uddyan in Shahbagh experienced heavy pressure as supporters started gathering in the area since morning. And this snarl spilled onto to other crucial city streets.
Around noon, the road from Shahbagh to Matsya Bhaban was closed, which backed up traffic gridlock.
Big tailbacks also developed on the Uttara-Shahbagh route and Mohakhali-Motijheel via Magbazaar route after 11am. Vehicles moved at a slow pace on the Gabtoli-Shahbagh road.
Although the rally was organised commemorating the March 7 historic speech, Awami League general secretary Syed Ashraful Islam in his speech, said, "The rally has been organised for resisting the challenge Khaleda Zia threw against the country's independence."
"Khaleda Zia is an ISI agent. She had participated in the last national election with funding from ISI. Khaleda Zia wants to foil the trial of war criminals," he added.
The AL leaders had been working to ensure a massive gathering at the Wednesday rally. Awami League central leaders have informed that leaders, activists and supporters from entire Dhaka and its adjacent districts joined the rally.
