It's a plot against Suranjit, says ex-APS
Omar Faruq Talukder
Terming the railwaygate scandal as a plot against Suranjit Sengupta, his sacked assistant personal secretary Omar Faruq Talukder claimed on Wednesday that the minister is not involved with the incident.
"The plot was hatched to disgrace Suranjit Sengupta. He is not involved with any kind of corruption," Faruq told reporters after submitting his explanation regarding his involvement with the stashes of money recovered from his car and sources of his wealth.
He also explained his role in the recruitment process of Railway's east zone.
A three-panel ACC team interrogated him for around two hours from 2:00pm to find his involvement with the allegations.
The ACC investigation team on Monday issued summon asking Faruq to appear before it on Wednesday in the wake of Tk 70 lakh recovery from his car.
On query who invented the plot, Faruq told reporters to interrogate the driver as he (the driver) suddenly entered the Border Guard Bangladesh headquarters in the capital on April 9 and created the scene.
On another query, he claimed that the Tk 70 lakh that was stashed at his car is his own money.
On April 9 night, Ali Azam, the car driver of the assistant personal secretary of Suranjit Sengupta, a minister without portfolio, suddenly entered the Border Guard Bangladesh headquarters in the capital and pulled up the vehicle near the main entrance sometimes later.
He shouted that there was illegal money inside the car, drawing the attention of the BGB men and leading to the detention of all four, including himself, for hours before their release on verification of their identifies the next day.
Faruq, Yusuf Ali Mridha, the sacked general manager (east) of Bangladesh Railway, and Enamul Huq, the railway's divisional security commandant, were on the vehicle.
Following the incident, Faruq was sacked and Mridha and Enamul were suspended on Sunday.
The recovery created sensation due to the identities of the persons who were inside the APS's car and their statements that they were going to the minister's residence.
Against the backdrop of the incident, Suranjit Sengupta on Monday resigned from his post, though he was made a minister without portfolio a day after his resignation.
