Muslim Women – Fundamentalism and Law

July 12th to 14th 2012, Mumbai

Aawaaz-e-Niswaan, a feminist group working on issues of Muslim women, invites applications for a three day training program for activist working with Muslim women.

Aawaaz-e-Niswaan is striving to raise voices against violence against women, religious intolerance, et al and trying to get focus on the issue of Muslim women in the women's rights discourse.  To further our process we have planned a three day national workshop.

The workshop will take you through understanding the complexities of the Muslim identity in Secular India, covering issues such as fundamentalism, religious impositions, communalism, lack of autonomy, and the right over our own bodies.  The objective of the workshop is reflecting on the interaction of the personal and political and implications on activism for the rights of Muslim women.

The workshop will be conducted in Hindi and the structure of the workshop will involve group reading followed by discussions and debates as well as film screenings.  The training workshop will be interactive.  There will be long sessions and the participants will be expected to read everyday so those interested in reading should apply for this training.

Participants are requested to bear the cost of their travel. The workshop will be held in Mumbai.  Accommodation, food and cost of course material will be taken care of by Aawaaz-e-Niswaan. Participants are expected to reach the venue by July 11th evening.
