[mukto-mona] Re: [Politiconomy] Repression of journalists in a democracy

Professor might be looking for a top post in future BNP led government? A cordial call from Mr. Moudud may have changed his orientation?
However, he is a good man and I like his moderate views about Bangladeshi politics.

I could not read Prof. Dewan's article due to trouble with the link, but lately he has been harmonizing with the BNP choir. The problem with that approach is that it leaves us, his avid readers, with shallow, superficial and silly account of events with no in-depth analysis.

There is an unfortunate history of police in the subcontinent being used as an extension of the political objective of the Administration, be that British Colonial or the neo-colonial spirited independent countries. Bangladeshi politics has always used the police force to serve its selfish ends, making it impossible for the police to remain neutral.

Nonetheless, I would refrain from blanketly blaming the police.  I have a lot of sympathy with and respect for the institution. I come from a Police family on my father's side -- my Dada was a Police Officer of the British Raj (a rare post for a native), and my Phupa, a decorated Superintendent (awarded for his excellent humanitarian work in disaster management of 1970 cyclone in Patuakhali). To prove what an honest, non-bribe-taking Policeman my Phupa was, I proudly point to where he and his family lived after retirement -- the smallest house in Mohammadpur, Dhaka.

The Police Force has gone through a lot of modern-day training and education in Bangladesh in an effort to make it more public service oriented. Police Officers are much better educated than they used to be before, some of them even have law degrees. Even mid level officers are subjected to regular exams and reviews. So Sahara Khatun's statement that the Police is "ager cheye bhalo" should not be dismissed and laughed at.

The climate of politicized police is truly reprehensible, and I cannot come up with any easy solution.

The current spat of repression of journalists by the police may not be as simple as it looks.

"Police should be empowered to arrest criminals without any discrimination."

Super! But, I would not agree with you about Bangladesh becoming a police state, because I know the symptom. People should not use that word left and right. That is simply a political rhetoric. Is Shahara incompetent to bring law and order? I do not know. I have not seen much law and order since Bangladesh was born. Creating chaos could be in our genes? Who knows?

SD,
It does need million Police to stop Police brutalities in Bangladesh. Just a clear policy from Hasina administration will do the job.Nobody should be above the law and Police won't be used for politicial pupose is needed in Bangladesh. In addition to that  inefficient Home Minister should be sac
ked for failng to restore order. If Hasina fails to win next election, Shahara Khatun will be number one reason for her defeat, Sooner Hasina understands the reality better for her party's interest. But the thing is while in power rulers become blind and take no action against the wrongdoers and  inefficient Ministers.
All previous governments since our liberation used Police for party interest, that's the main reason for our Police to improve law and order in the country.
Police should be empowered to arrest criminals without any discrimination.

Police state like East Germany or North Korea? No, I do not think so. There is a law and order problem since the day first of independence. If somebody is disappeared or murdered, we can't just blame our government for all our crimes. How can a state control 160 mil people with only few lakhs of police force? Unless, we create a police state!!! That would mean one in five Bangladeshis should be part of Bangladeshi secret police force. That idea is pretty absurd by any criteria.
