Thanks, Subimal, for pointing at class, and not mentioning 'religion' for a change. This time we're talking about domestic violence and a particularly unpleasant instance at the Karnataka Family Courts. Protesting against the event was very very important. I am glad to hear that the protesting had an immediate impact.
I thought domestic violence is endemic in our subcontinent and not so bad in the West. My delusions were totally shattered in 2005 when I read a NYTimes article on the rise of domestic violence in Europe, and in -- of all countries -- Sweden! There were media, police and other authorities who conspire customarily to keep the news suppressed. I realize that domestic violence is a subject that requires newer, deeper and sharper attention.
A glimmer of hope in Bangladesh has come with an extensive campaign of public awareness and a very potent Violence against Women & Children Act. Lately, violence against women is on the rise, but violent murders have risen overall. I blame the HuJi type of campaigns underground for many of the violence against women.

Real stories from Bangladeshi diaspora in America:
1. This (Muslim) family is indirectly known to me. The husband killed his wife suspecting that she was cheating. He is now serving life term. The two little kids are now being raised by one of my close friends' niece.
2. This one involves people very close to me. Both the husband and wife have Master's from BD and had prestigious jobs in BD. Here they are doing hourly jobs and also running a small business. The husband is a real patriarch. One day the husband beat her wife. She left house to go to one of their friends' house. The husband was not repentant and did not care about calling her to find out where she was. She had to give in and come back home in the middle of the night.

I have heard this accusation many times before from you, Ms. Majid. This does not surprise me at all. The story, I told, was to point out what is at stake for women in our society. Even justices may not avoid weighing in consequences of the verdict in their interpretations of laws involving women. This type of story is common across religious boundary. Here, I only mentioned one from my own experience. Had I thought that you will construe it as Muslim bashing, I would have told another story involving Hindu community. It never came to my mind, until I read your e-mail this morning. Sorry for my grave mistake. This one involves a Hindu man, who used to beat his wife in the middle of the night, and his wife would scream for help so loudly that everybody would wake up at her scream. She would narrate during her wailing the reason for beating in the middle of the night. That's how we knew why she was being beaten. Every time the lady would decline sexual advance by her husband at night due to deep sleep or tired or menstrual cycle or whatever, the guy would beat her. I am sorry - I did not mention this story to balance my previous one. My mistake! I could be spared from your wrath. It is quite disturbing that we have come to a point where we cannot criticize anything without being religiously correct. Farida talks about her scholarly works all the time. Always the answer is either misinterpretation or mistranslation of religious verses, as if nothing wrong with anything; everything is hunky-dory. In the mean time, we are bombarded with how to manuals for wife-beating as per Islamic traditions. I am not an atheist. I am a believer in God. But, I have been criticizing Hinduism for its mountainous superstitions. Open your mind and eyes if you want to do anything about superstitions in your community, and in your religion. Don't just hide under misinterpretation and misquote logics all the time. I have been hearing this logic forever from Q. Rahman. Give us a break! People are smart enough, and I am sure, no one is buying any of those nonsense arguments. So, don't even try it while pretending to be a scholar. Point out everyting that is wrong with Hinduism, I will come forward to defend you. You have my word. Jiten Roy --- On Sun, 9/9/12, Farida Majid <farida_majid@hotmail.com> wrote:
