I think there are a few things that everybody must be aware about the Gono Jagoron Manco and Shahbag Movement.
First. it is not against Islamist, It is for a fare trial of those war criminals who were as party engaged as para military force assisting the Pakistani Army in performing the the Mass killing and planned rape and sexual molestation and killing of more than three million Women. It is against any effort that may disregard and spoil the effort of trial of their heinous crimes against humanity in 1971.
Secondly, the movement is against Fundamentalist extremists who using Islam hide their dangerous political ambition of kuling minorities. Jamat follows Moududi who reinterpreted Quran, His version of Quran focuses on state based on mono-ethic religion meaning only Muslims can live in a country. I am adding a few quotations on the MUDUDI Version of explanation of Islam that Jamat Shibir preaches and envisions to reach. All other Islamist thinker and groups in Bangladesh are against this Moududi version of Islam. Because In Greater Bengal Islam has been preached by Islami Sufis who more focused on the peace and love and are tolerant to every religion.
In that's sense, Shahbag also more focuses on our version of Islam, which is embedded in the culture, land, language and simplicity of mass people in the Lowerr Ganges region. Shahbag is trying nurture ownership of a culture which unites all, and rejects division.
It also rejects compromising attitudes of the opposition and the ruling party and asks for integrity of upholding pride of values that democracy promotes in true sense, the pride of People's unity, right to protest when political will may compromise the fareness of a trial which may lead to let free the accused whose offences are more than the punishment announced.
Now just imagine, You are living in a country where majority are non Muslim, What will happen if a group of extremists want to turn it to a mono-ethic (I mean only Christian, or only Hindu or Only Muslim) country? We can not imagine such a situation. We must reject it with all our effort. And if they begin killing and looting again now in 2013, use terror to shut people's mouth, and to force the Government to stop trial of War criminals who are responsible for killing 3 million, and rape of 4 hundred thousand (the Doctor who worked in the hospital serving the rape vicxtim in 1971 assumed though official our Government say 2 hundred thousand it will be more than Four), we believe any one giving hands to them has integrity problem.
To us it is a travel begun through conscience, how we look at our country, nation state and its past, present and future. It is important, to organize to upheld everything that is good for a secular nation, and it is not for the moment, it si abeginning, many believes.
