Re: [mukto-mona] Rally at White House on Wed 10th April: You are invited

Yes, Mr. Chakraborty could join the Women's Movement without being a member of that organization. Yes, you can join any movement if you think the 'cause' is right. White people joined the Civil-Rights movement of the black Americans.

Therefore, the problem is not what he said; problem is with people who are not aware of the background of the Unity Council. We have been explaining the cause for which the Unity Council was created ever since the initiation of this organization in 1985. We have started this organization in the USA in 1990, and ever since we are addressing the question as to why the word 'Muslim' is missing from the banner. Even many Hindus, who are not aware of the historical background of this organization, think we are discriminating Muslims. This confusion arises from the lack of awareness about this organization.

The Unity Council is a religious minority rights organization, born in protest of Ershad's declaration of 'Islam' as the state religion. No one with a right mind can support this type of blatant discrimination and violation of rights of the millions of religious minorities, especially, in a country that was liberated with blood and enormous sacrifices of the religious minorities. Unfortunately, Islam is still the state religion. Therefore, the cause for which Unity Council was created is still exist even after 28 years.

Unfortunately, things are getting worse day-by-day. Now, anti-independence forces have more rights than the pro-liberation forces. It's a sad story of utter failure on the part of the pro-liberation forces.

I need to clarify one thong. I am in no way connected with Unity Council. I simply expressed my opinion. What I have said should be true for any human rights organization.

Dear Readers,

1. As I mentioned in the past, I am ready to be an active and vocal member there if they consider to change the name to "United Council" (or something similar to that). Alternatively, they might consider to add "Muslim" in the existing name.
2. However, I have my full support to the cause. Nobody should harm others' religions place and the violators must be severely punished by the law.
3. I have no doubt in my mind that almost all  Bangladeshi Muslims want to live harmoniously with other religions.

With best regards,
Em

Unity Council is a specialized human rights organizations. As the name implies, it should have members from religious minorities. This in no way implies that it is anti-Muslim organization. I don't think the Unity Council will object to a Muslim joining the rallies organized by it. I can support a women's rights organization without becoming a member of the organization. I don't understand how Mr. Rahman smells religious riot in the activity of the Unity Council.

This is a very sensitive and important issue. I have mentioned before and I remind (And request) leadership of "Unity council" to take Bangladeshi Muslims with you. There are tons of Muslims who are speaking up against violence in Bangladesh.

Sadly the unity council is presenting the whole situation as some kind of "Religious riot". I am afraid politics has more to do with it. If we feel we need "President Obama" is solve our issues, we should include the "Biggest issue" of all, our political "Deadlock" in Bangaldesh. Since our political leadership took a very inflexible attitude and the WHOLE country is suffering for it.

As I have said it again and again, if our government starts punishing people (After due process) for such crimes, we'll see significant reduction in crimes in our country.

Shalom!
