Bring Tarique back for trial

14-party asks govt

Staff Correspondent

Alleging that Tarique Rahman has repeatedly been conspiring from London to topple the government, the Awami League-led 14-party combine yesterday demanded the government bring him back and try him in different cases now at the trial stage.
It also demanded the formation of a commission to find out all the persons involved in delivering the death penalty to Col Abu Taher and punishment to those if found alive.
The demands came up at a meeting of the alliance at the political office of AL President Sheikh Hasina in the capital's Dhanmondi. Suranjit Sengupta, advisory council member of AL, chaired the meeting.
Briefing newsmen after the meeting, AL presidium member Mohammad Nasim said BNP Senior Vice-chairman Tarique Rahman had left the country for treatment on a "bond" that he would not get involved in politics again. "But he [Tarique] has been conspiring against the government and the country repeatedly," he complained.
Col Abu Taher was hanged under the directives of BNP founder Ziaur Rahman, added the former home minister.
About a probable dialogue with the BNP, he said the door for talks was still open. The BNP can place its proposal on the polls-time government at the ensuing budget session of parliament.
Regarding the "ban" on rallies and processions in the capital, Nasim said under the constitution, holding rallies and processions are democratic rights of the political parties. They can exercise these rights after obtaining prior permission from the relevant authorities.
The meeting decided to hold anti-terrorism rallies across the country from next month. In the first week of June, the alliance will hold rallies in Manikganj, Chittagong, Sirajganj and Narail. Besides, it will form terrorism resistance committees in each district.
Alliance leaders Rashed Khan Menon, Nooh-ul-Alam Lenin, Sharif Nurul Ambia, Ahmed Hossain, AFM Bahauddin Nasim and Mrinal Kanti Das were present, among others.
Tarique Rahman now faces 16 cases for laundering money, grenade attack on an AL rally on August 21, 2004 and other offences.
