[mukto-mona] US diplomat Wendy Sherman sees polls fair, inclusive

Sherman sees polls fair, inclusive

The US diplomat currently in Dhaka as co-chair of the second US-Bangladesh Partnership Dialogue expressed the oprtimism at short brief to the press at the Ruposhi Bangla Hotel on Monday.

When asked on what basis she made the remark since the two main political camps remained at loggerheads, she said, "Bangladesh has always chosen democracy since its independence."

A former special advisor to President Bill Clinton and Policy Coordinator on North Korea, Sherman noted although faced with grave crises at different times, Bangladesh eventually went down the road to democracy and said she hoped it would make the same choice this time around as well.

However, the US diplomat said violent politics were to be shunned and political parties should by all means come away from such programmes all the while recognising one's right to protest and demonstrate publicly.

She noted that there was a general strike called by BNP the day she landed in Dhaka.

Incidentally, the State Department official admitted that she had had to cancel her scheduled meeting with Khaleda Zia due to other engagements.Tanim Ahmed,  bdnews24.com
