Re: [mukto-mona] Sherman cancels Khaleda meet

Cold-war era is gone, and terrorist acts have changed the equation. Yes, this is all good - when a superpower supports the people.

I think – we are watching the last scene of the political drama. I hear dialogues of the leader of the government party everyday; I like most of what I hear from her. Can I hear some dialogues of the opposition leader? What's going on? I am not interested to hear the boring dialogues of the supporting actors. Where is the heroine/hero?

I always ask myself - why a large segment of the population in Bangladesh are so ignorant, dumb, and unworthy of freedom. You give them freedom, they want imprisonment. These people belong to a camp.

Some political party wants Hortal every week, if not every day, and these ignorant dumb people are ready to sacrifice everything, including their lives, to achieve that goal. I know they are from the destitute segment of the population, and they have no horse in the game. Yet, they are in the forefront of the processions and they are the destructive force of the Hortal movement.

BNP/Jamat has adopted Hortal movement as their policy. I know Hortal is a democratic right, but when that right destroys the economy of a country, it's not a democratic right anymore; at that point – it becomes a subversive activity against a country. Sometime I wonder – do they understand the responsibility of a citizen in a sovereign country? Do they deserve sovereign country? This movement is no longer a political demonstration; it looks like a cessation or liberation movement. How long can this be tolerated?

I know Indian authority is pitched off when their President did not get the privilege of meeting the opposition leader Khaleda Zia. Now, we see US is pitched off also with the opposition party's Hortal movement.

I like the Under Secretary's comments, "…I worry about a cycle of violence that shuts down a city of millions on what seems like a daily basis, that dramatically slows Bangladesh's economic growth, that feeds a political culture that rejects compromise, that breeds fear in minority populations, that brands some citizens and their beliefs less worthy than others, and that radicalizes segments of the population."

In the morning of September 11, 2001, when I first heard on the radio that two planes had hit the two World Trade Center towers in New Your City, I had no doubt that they were the acts of terrorists. I also felt at that time that the terrorist actions on the USA would be good for the world.

You see, in 1971, the USA was on the side of the fanatics who were committing the most heinous crimes to 'protest Islam' in East Bengal. Isn't it good that the USA is now against the force "that breeds fear in minority populations, that brands some citizens and their beliefs less worthy than others, and that radicalizes segments of the population"?

In the old times, the US leaders had their country's strategic interests served even by supporting tyrants and religious hate-mongers of the world. Now, along with caring about their strategic interests, they seem to care a lot more about human rights in the world. Isn't it good that the only superpower of the world now talks a lot more about its own internal values for the world?

This could be the last thing that BNP wanted. It has made plenty of
blunders and now, US being pissed off with BNP/Jamat' conduct, the
pressure can finally break the camel's back?

Of course, this should not automatically give Awamis full license to
go for the kill. That would be a bad idea.

Sherman cancels Khaleda meet

Stresses need to get rid of 'cycle of election-year violence'

Star Online Report

Wendy R Sherman, US under secretary of state for political affairs,
has cancelled her meeting with opposition leader Khaleda Zia.

The US top official, who arrived here on Sunday to attend the second
US-Bangladesh Partnership Dialogue, was scheduled to meet Khaleda
Monday afternoon.

Asked about the meeting cancellation, Kelly S McCarthy, press and
information officer at the US embassy in Dhaka, told The Daily Star
that the Under  Secretary had regretted that a hartal marked the first
day of the partnership dialogue, and subsequent schedule changes
precluded her call on with the chairperson.

Sherman herself explained the reason at a joint press conference at
State Guest House Meghna.

"My schedule required me to make some changes…I met with the
opposition leader last time I was in Dhaka."

Talking to reporters after addressing the partnership dialogue at
Ruposhi Bangla Hotel later in the day, the Under Secretary said: "I
was rather surprised when I arrived yesterday, a hartal was underway."

In her remarks at the partnership dialogue, Sherman pointed out
Bangladesh's success in different sectors.

She however cautioned that the ultimate success of the country's story
is not guaranteed.

"My colleagues and I, along with a great many Bangladeshis, have
watched with dismay as the streets of Dhaka have been shut down by
hartal after hartal, by angry demonstration after angry
demonstration."

She continued: "I cannot presume to tell the people of Bangladesh or
your leaders what issues demand attention, what wrongs must be
righted, or what approach your country must take as it faces the grave
challenges of the future. In Bangladesh, as in any democracy, this is
for the people alone to decide."

She expressed her worry that about series of shutdowns.

"…I worry about a cycle of violence that shuts down a city of millions
on what seems like a daily basis, that dramatically slows Bangladesh's
economic growth, that feeds a political culture that rejects
compromise, that breeds fear in minority populations, that brands some
citizens and their beliefs less worthy than others, and that
radicalises segments of the population."

"To truly prosper, Bangladesh must free itself of this long-standing
cycle of election-year violence."
