Oh, sorry. I had a critical typo error in my last post below. I have now corrected it below. The whole sentence in question is, "You see, in 1971, the USA was on the side of the fanatics who were committing the most heinous crimes to 'protect Islam' in East Bengal."

Cold-war era is gone, and terrorist acts have changed the equation. Yes, this is all good - when a superpower supports the people.
I think – we are watching the last scene of the political drama. I hear dialogues of the leader of the government party everyday; I like most of what I hear from her. Can I hear some dialogues of the opposition leader? What's going on? I am not interested to hear the boring dialogues of the supporting actors. Where is the heroine/hero?
I always ask myself - why a large segment of the population in Bangladesh are so ignorant, dumb, and unworthy of freedom. You give them freedom, they want imprisonment. These people belong to a camp.
Some political party wants Hortal every week, if not every day, and these ignorant dumb people are ready to sacrifice everything, including their lives, to achieve that goal. I know they are from the destitute segment of the population, and they have no horse in the game. Yet, they are in the forefront of the processions and they are the destructive force of the Hortal movement.
BNP/Jamat has adopted Hortal movement as their policy. I know Hortal is a democratic right, but when that right destroys the economy of a country, it's not a democratic right anymore; at that point – it becomes a subversive activity against a country. Sometime I wonder – do they understand the responsibility of a citizen in a sovereign country? Do they deserve sovereign country? This movement is no longer a political demonstration; it looks like a cessation or liberation movement. How long can this be tolerated?
I know Indian authority is pitched off when their President did not get the privilege of meeting the opposition leader Khaleda Zia. Now, we see US is pitched off also with the opposition party's Hortal movement.

I like the Under Secretary's comments, "…I worry about a cycle of violence that shuts down a city of millions on what seems like a daily basis, that dramatically slows Bangladesh's economic growth, that feeds a political culture that rejects compromise, that breeds fear in minority populations, that brands some citizens and their beliefs less worthy than others, and that radicalizes segments of the population."
In the morning of September 11, 2001, when I first heard on the radio that two planes had hit the two World Trade Center towers in New Your City, I had no doubt that they were the acts of terrorists. I also felt at that time that the terrorist actions on the USA would be good for the world.
You see, in 1971, the USA was on the side of the fanatics who were committing the most heinous crimes to 'protect Islam' in East Bengal. Isn't it good that the USA is now against the force "that breeds fear in minority populations, that brands some citizens and their beliefs less worthy than others, and that radicalizes segments of the population"?
In the old times, the US leaders had their country's strategic interests served even by supporting tyrants and religious hate-mongers of the world. Now, along with caring about their strategic interests, they seem to care a lot more about human rights in the world. Isn't it good that the only superpower of the world now talks a lot more about its own internal values for the world?
