Let me put some context here. Saudi Arabia is a very conservative country where women are not allowed to drive a car. Recently Saudi government is trying to offer more opportunities to women in work space. It is quite natural that, conservatives will push back.
There are many such conservatives in the US as well. They actually think women should not be allowed to work outside homes. They "Home school"there kids and keep women at homes to clean up and make babies. Today we have woman as head of our state. Some of our forefathers used to put women in fire if her husband died. Today we do not do such things any more.
My mother was the first woman from her community to appear for SSC and HSC. Some people opposed to it from fear of unknown. Same people are sending their girl child to universities. So we have to allow the Saudis some time to adjust to new realities. They have done well in last 50 years.
They have some major social issues involving men and women. I guess with time they will figure it out. Islam says women even lead army to wars around 1400 years ago. So in some cases Islam is far ahead of many tribal societies.
