Mueen-Uddin picked up mother, says Selina's son

Chowdhury Mueen-Uddin was part of the Al-Badr group that took away journalist Selina Parvin, her son has told a war crimes tribunal.

Sumon Zahid testified before the second war crimes tribunal of Bangladesh on Sunday, a day after war crimes accused said he would not come to Bangladesh to stand trial.

Mueen-Uddin, widely believed to be the 'Operation-in-Charge' of the notorious militia outfit, is being tried in absentia.

In an interview with Qatar-based Al Jazeera, he refuted the charges levelled against him and said the tribunals trying Liberation-time atrocities were 'a farce'.

The collaborative force had spearheaded extermination of Bangladeshi intelligentsia a couple of days before the nation became independent in 1971.

Selina's son Zahid, testifying as a prosecution witness, told the tribunal that his mother was blindfolded and picked up in his presence on Dec 13, 1971.

Zahid, then an 8-year-old, said one of his maternal uncles had recognised Mueen-Uddin and he later became certain of the identity through research.

The Al-Badr leader used to call Parvin 'Bubu' (sister) as they both hailed from Feni and used to work with the same newspaper, he said.

Zahid testified as the third prosecution witness.

Al-Badr members picked up Selina Parvin from her New Circular Road house in Dhaka on Dec 13, 1971. The street has been named after her.

He said members of the militia outfit came to their house at around 1:30pm. One of Selina's brothers was staying with them.

"My uncle and I were on the roof and mother was cooking dinner. A Jeep, a microbus and a military lorry stopped in front of our house."

He recalled the microbus was covered with mud on all sides.

There was a knock at the house's main gate and then National Assembly member Advocate Kamrul Islam Syed Salahuddin, who resided in the adjoining flat, opened it.

When the strangers asked about Selina Parvin's flat, Salahuddin showed them. He returned to his house as per their orders.

As there was continuous knocking on their door, Sumon and his uncle got down from the roof and peeped to see who it was.

"Mother opened the door and the strangers asked her who she was. At the time, one of them saw us and shouted 'hands up' pointing his gun.

"My uncle 'Uzir' and I came down with our hands raised."

Selina introduced her son and younger brother. The strangers suspected Uzir as a freedom fighter but Selina said her sibling was a student and ran a shop.

"During the conversation, I went to my mother and stood holding the end of her saree," Sumon said.

"They told my mother, 'you have to come to the Secretariat with us'. Mother said, 'How'd I go, I don't have a curfew pass'.

"They said, 'It won't be a problem, we have passes'," he remembered.

He said he too wanted to go with his mother but a stranger objected in Urdu. "Bachcha Log Nehi Jayega, Andar Mein Jaon (Kids won't go, get inside)."

Sumon and his uncle were scared at the threat by the strangers who had their faces covered and were armed.

"Mother gently kept her hand on my head and said, 'Sumon, eat something with your uncle. I'll be back shortly'," the martyred journalist's son said.

These were the last words his mother had had with him.

She was found days later at the Rayer Bazar Killing Ground with others after independence. All of the bodies bore torture marks.

On that night, the strangers had blindfolded Selina Parvin and tied her hands before taking her on the microbus.

A day after Bangladesh's independence, Selina's two brothers learnt from martyr Munir Chowdhury's brother Shamser Chowdhury that their sister's body lied with many others at Rayer Bazar.

Selina was buried the following day at the Azimpur graveyard.

On Mueen-Uddin's accompanying the Al-Badr group, he said, "My uncle Shahabuddin was a Chhatra Union (Matia group) activist and Chowdhury Mueen-Uddin was associated with Islami Chhatra Sangha. The two groups had political confrontations often."

Sumon said Shahbuddin knew Mueen-Uddin. "Seeing photos of Mueen-Uddin in newspapers, Uzir uncle had said he (Mueen-Uddin) was with the group that picked up mother."

He said he had learnt from one Delowar Hossain, the only survivor from the Rayer Bazar killing, in 1996 that his mother had been kept at a room at Mohammadpur Physical Training Centre with 20-25 others.

"Mr Delowar had said my mother was kept in the same room with him and others on the morning of Dec 14.

"I have learnt from him how they tortured and killed my mother," he said, breaking down in tears. "I have come to know about others who were locked in the room with her."

The prosecution witness said from his talks with Delowar Hossain and other sources, he had become certain that Mueen-Uddin was the 'Operation-in-Charge' of Al-Badr.

"My mother was not that famous as a journalist in 1971 but still she had to die at the hands of the Al-Badr.

"The reason was that poets, writers, litterateurs like Professor Munir Chowdhury, journalist Shahidullah Kaiser, Zahir Raihan, ANM Golam Mostofa who were inspired by the spirit of liberation used to write regularly in 'Shilalipi' edited by my mother," he said.

During his investigation into the abduction and killing of his mother, Sumon learnt that Selina Parvin used to bear the treatment expenses of local freedom fighters with money she got by selling 'Shilalipi'.

Martyred Prof Giasuddin's nephew Masuda Banu Ratna deposed as the first prosecution witness on Jul 15 followed by Munir Chowdhury's son Asif Munier.

Mueen-Uddin fled to UK after Bangladesh won independence.

He is accused of abduction, torture and heading a militia during the war. He is said to have assisted Pakistani army in identifying and murdering prominent intellectuals during the War of Independence.

Eleven charges have been levelled against him.

On Jun 26 this year, Chowdhury Mueen-Uddin was indicted along with Ashrafuzzaman Khan.

Mueen-Uddin is a Director of Muslim spiritual care provision and a trustee of the charity, Muslim Aid. He also co-founded the influential Muslim Council of Britain.
