RE: [mukto-mona] Freedom of speech when faced with tyrannical expression

Mr. Jiten Roy,

Most probably, I read your writing on your journey from Dhaka to Nator and a stranger of long beard belonging to Muslim community and crossing shallow river and tried to stay one Peer's location and got denial from Peer to stay at his location and you were cordially accepted by one Industrialist and gave you affectionate caring like his son. And at the end , you expressed your dismay why I did not ask the name of a long beard stranger of your lone deserted companion when your journey to your land was very uncertain for your identity as a bangalee at the same time of hindus.  Your lucid description in bangla brought back me to 1971 when we were deserted for my birth as a dual identity.  Your vivid description gave me flash back of mass exodus in 1971 and I was also the one of them who had nothing more than a only desire to  live and find a safe shelter.

Regards from my heart to you.

Thank you for your response. I understand what you are trying to say. The very same thing happened to me in my life as well. My neighbors are Muslims, as well.

During liberation struggle, I came home at Nator from Dhaka mostly on foot; transportation system was non-existent at that time. On the way, I had to cross the Jamuna River on foot, which is about 10 miles of sandy desert during the summer. I was shown my way by a stranger, who happened to be a Muslim. It was so vast that I couldn't see the other side, and I did not know which way to go. It's a dangerous terrain. He was holding a machete for his safety. I had to hand over my life to him; he could have killed me, and no one would ever know what happened to me; he could have robbed me easily, which is very common phenomena in that barren land.

I still do not know why he sacrificed his time and safety for me, but he did. I wish - I could meet him in person to thank him. My memory is filled with many such generosities from Muslim friends and neighbors. I am sure, every Hindu has such memories. Hindus cannot live in Bangladesh without these people. Thankfully, such people are the majority in Bangladesh.

Then, there are others as well, who are brainwashed to believe that they are part of the greater Muslim Ummah. In their view, world is divided into two types of human beings, Muslim and non-Muslims. They do not believe in nationhood; they are citizens of the Muslim-world. This is an international Islamist movement. Unfortunately, Golam Azam and thousands of his followers belong to this group.

When we talk about Golam Azam, we talk about Islamists. That, in no way, diminishes the benevolence and compassion of the greater Muslim community in Bangladesh and around the world. It very important to isolate these two groups. There is no need to mix them up. They are totally two different breeds of Muslims. Unfortunately, we have to live with these phenomena.

Regards to you,

Jiten Roy

Mr.Jiten Roy,

I was really shocked to hear the verdict on Golam Azan as he is the mastermind behind all organized killing and bangaleee annihilations done in 1971. He was given 90 years jail instead of capital punishment , with preference to  his older ages. In 1971, we were attacked by Golam Azam's gangs who believe in Islam and we were then protected by the same community in 1971. Problem lies with the teaching of religion. That is why I mentioned some name of person bearing the same community who really showed us human behaviour as I behave to human beings in every time.
We got our independence with a short period of time.  After liberation , allies of Golam Azam were given protection by the freedom fighters, either from the blood relation  or in exchange of  material benefit. And at the same time , Tajuddin , second in command of Bangabandhu was politically kept inactive. Tajuddin, if in active in politics,  can align party with a secular characteristics.   Party did not take proper measure to abolish culturally  communal  forces inside the  party   and some acts of party instead helped them to flourish. I know Awami league internally, when Awamai league in power , two will be given preferences, one is Madrasha and another one is army. And end result of Madrasha is to strengthen the hand of Jamat or Hepajot.  Awami league will not get single vote from them. Mosque and Military have no good example for our secular politics.
Please read the link:

All problems lies with the hypocrisy of Awami league leadership.  This is the dual nature of Awami league's leadership to dig their own graves many times in history. Personally I know them that some of my friends know me. I might not be good narrator so you and some readers might be confused. I believe in compassion and loving kindness and try to defend truth in every time without considering colours, race and religions. I am not coward , and only coward can hide their own name and only clandestine mindset can have doubt to others.
Intellect without wisdom is curse.

Best regards to you.

Mr. Bose,

The problem is that - most of us do not understand your sarcasm. You are still a mystery to me. Your viewpoints contain conflicting thoughts.
For example, when you were talking about Golam Azam, you were also talking about a Muslim family, who sheltered your family during the war. These two thoughts should not appear together. Such talks will only confuse readers. I still do not know your position on Golam Azam, and his verdict.

You should know that tyrannical expressions are defended by freedom of speech.

As I understand that we are using free thinking forum where expression will be vibrant and talk will be full of humour or very serious or sarcastic. When we find  forceful and tyrannical attitude among us then it is very nice to say the person to use your tyrannical weapon and abolish the free thinker. As we have seen the democracies have long grappled with the issue of the limits, if any, to place on the expression of ideas and beliefs. The dilemma dates back at least to ancient Greece, when the Athenians, who cherished individual freedom, nevertheless prosecuted Socrates for his teachings, claiming that he had corrupted young people and insulted the gods. I am very little in compare to great Socrates.

Quote :"Freedom of speech is the political right to communicate one's opinions and ideas using one's body and property to anyone who is willing to receive them. The term freedom of expression is sometimes used synonymously, but includes any act of seeking, receiving and imparting information or ideas, regardless of the medium used. In practice, the right to freedom of speech is not absolute in any country and the right is commonly subject to limitations, as with libel, slander, obscenity, sedition (including, for example inciting ethnic hatred), copyright violation, revelation of information that is classified or otherwise."
