I actually do not have a high opinion of the Banga Sammelan. It is a business run by a group in New York City. To me, its monotonous songs, dances and seminars for 2-3 days are not worth the costs of registration, transportation, hotel accommodation, etc. Not being able to attract enough Bangladeshis is certainly one of its limitations.

However, the thought that Bangladesh is the hub of the Bangla language is foolish. I totally agree with Shah Deeldar's comments below.

Let me add that even the so-called educated people (BA, MA, etc. degree holders) from Bangladesh on an average are poor in reading, writing and speaking the Bangla language. The circumstances of the hateful/irresponsible nature of Pakistan forced a Language Movement on the people of East Bengal in the 1940's and 1950's. That was by no means a revolution for enriching people with improved Bangla language skills. Not has that translated much into improved Bangla language skills in Bangladesh over the last decades.

West Bengal is also being run by irresponsible people; and my opinion of them is not high. However, I do recognize that they never had to face the kind of predicament that the Bangalees of East Bengal faced during Pakistan. They had no valid reason to do something like the Language Movement of East Bengal. In spite of my not-so-high opinion of them, and in spite of their membership in a diverse system (the Indian Union), I believe they will continue to maintain their good quality in Bangla reading, writing, speaking and literary work.

Totally rubbish! Based on what? Needless to say that the quality of our Bangladeshi literature is dismally poor in comparison to West Bengal literary works. I have no problem confessing this unpalatable truth. We speak and write poorly in compared to our Western brothers and sisters. Yes, we got country but we have not achieved the quality yet.

I was once in the editorial board of the Banga Sammelan magazine more than twenty years back. From my experience in that organizational capacity, I would say that Banglaees of both Bengals have some blame to share for the absence of many Bangladeshi groups there.

 

Talking about Taslima Nasrin, my experience is that the principal players of Banga Sammelan want that gathering to remain apolitical, and do not want sensitive socio-political issues there. However, I would also say that most of them probably do not care to see a book-banning mentality there.

One reason I don't participate in Bangalee Shammelan is because a few years back when I wanted to go to the one in NYC, a special invited guest was Taslima Nasrin. The book that they discussed in there was a banned book of Taslima Nasrin.

শ্রেয়া ঘোষালের গানে গানে গত রোববার শেষ হলো জমজমাট বঙ্গ সম্মেলন। পাঁচ-ছয় হাজার দর্শকশ্রোতা মধ্যরাত অবধি এই অনুষ্ঠান উপভোগ করে। দর্শকশ্রোতার ভিড় সামলাতে পুলিশ হিমশিম খেতে হয়। আগামী বছর ৩৪তম সম্মেলন অনুষ্ঠিত হবে মার্কিন যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের ফ্লোরিডায়। 'বাংলার নব জাগরণ' শীর্ষক তিনদিনব্যাপী এ সম্মেলন টরন্টোতে শুরু হয়েছিল গত ৫ জুলাই।

 

 

তবে এবারের বঙ্গ সম্মেলনে বাংলাদেশ নেই, শুধুমাত্র বাংলাদেশি চিত্রশিল্পীদের চিত্র প্রদর্শনী ছাড়া। এর জন্য ভারতীয় বাঙালিদের অনীহা আর উদাসীনতা লক্ষণীয়! তারা দায়সারাভাবে বাংলাদেশকে মূল্যায়ন করে বলে অনেকের অভিযোগ। এবার ভিসার জটিলতার কারণে বাংলাদেশ থেকে ফাতেমা-তুজ-জোহরা এবং বারী সিদ্দিকী অংশ নিতে পারেননি। তবে চিত্রনায়িকা ববিতা এবং শিল্পী তপন চৌধুরী কানাডায় অবস্থান করছেন। শিল্পী হিসেবে কর্তৃপক্ষ তাদের আমন্ত্রণ করতে পারতেন।

 

 

 

 

 

এ সব কারণে প্রবাসী বাংলাদেশিরা ক্ষুব্ধ। অথচ বঙ্গ সম্মেলনটি হচ্ছে ভারতের পশ্চিমবঙ্গের বাংলা ভাষাভাষীদের নিয়ে; যা কিনা সমগ্র ভারতের পঞ্চাশটির অধিক আঞ্চলিক ভাষার একটি ভাষা বলে পরিচিত। কিন্তু স্বাধীন সার্বভৌম বাংলা ভাষাভাষীর ভূখণ্ড হিসেবে পৃথিবীর বুকে একমাত্র বাংলাদেশই স্বীকৃত। সেখানে বাংলাদেশের কোনো উল্লেখযোগ্য শিল্পী-সাহিত্যিক এবং সাংস্কৃতিককর্মী কাউকেই এই সম্মেলনে অংশগ্রহণ করার তেমন কোনো সুযোগ তারা দেন না। বিগত সম্মেলনগুলোতেও তা লক্ষ করা গেছে। তাই সাংকৃতিককর্মী আঞ্জুমান রোজী বলেন, 'বাংলাদেশের বাংলা সংস্কৃতির প্রতি এই উন্নাসিকতার তীব্র প্রতিবাদ জানাই। একটি কথা তাদের ভুলে গেলে চলবে না যে, বাংলা ভাষার মূল তীর্থস্থান বাংলাদেশ।'
