Justice Sahai begins India riot probe

The one-man inquiry commission headed by Justice Vishnu Sahai (retired) to conduct a probe into the recent incidents of Muzaffarnagar violence has started.
Constituted by the state government of Uttar Pradesh, the largest province of India, the commission will conduct inquiry into incidents of violence in Muzaffarnagar as well as in the adjoining districts of Shamli, Baghpat, Saharanpur and Meerut. Justice Vishnu Sahai is retired judge of the Allahabad High Court. Constituted on Sept. 9, the commission will mainly look into administrative lapses, in controlling the violence, and will submit its report to the government within two months.
Last month's communal clashes in Muzaffarnagar and adjoining areas have claimed 62 lives and displaced over 40,000 people. According to recent reports, 72 families, who were displaced after last month's riots are still living in a relief camp with their family. On the other hand, Shamli district magistrate PP Singh told Arab News that property worth over Rs30 million was damaged in the district during the riots.
As many as 210 houses including religious places belonging to Muslims were found damaged and a loss of Rs30.4 million in villages like Fugana, Lannk, Bahawdi, Lisadh in Shamli district has been estimated.
