Opposition's 48-hour blockade enters day-2 amid violence: 5 dead
The 48-hour blockade, called by BNP-led 18-party alliance, is underway for second consecutive day on Wednesday amid couple of cocktails explosion. Five people were killed in violence related to the countrywide blockade enforced by the 18-party alliance.
A woman was killed after a branch of tree, cut by Shibir men to block road, fell upon her at Gapinathpur under Kolaroa upazila of the district on Wednesday noon. The deceased was identified as Ambia Khatun, 30, wife of Harunur Rashid of Gapinathpur. The incident took place at around 12:30am on Satkhira-Jessore highway.Earlier, An activist of Jamaat-e-Islami was killed when security forces fired in self defence at Agordari area of Satkhira's Sadar Upazila.
Two people, including an activist of Jamaat-e-Islami and a root level leader of Chhatra Dal, were killed in a triangular clash among Awami League, BNP and law enforcers in Belkuchi Upazila of the district town on Wednesday, the second day of 48-hour blockade. The deceased was identified as Abdul Jalil, 55, an activist of Jamaat of the area and Masum Billah, 22, son of Shamsul Alam Sarker, also organizing secretary of Bera Union Chhatra Dal.
A woman who sustained injuries when a crude bomb hit in her head at Malibagh in the capital yesterday died at Dhaka Medical College and Hospital early today. Victim Anwara Begum, 42, breathed her last around 4:00am.
Dhaka
Some protesters exploded six cocktails in city's Gabtoli area at around 6:30am. Some local buses are plying through the street and no long-route bus left Dhaka from the Gabtoli terminal.
At least 20 people were injured as the opposition activists clashed with law enforcers blocking Dhaka-Aricha highway at Phulbaria in Savar, on the outskirts of the capital.
The opposition men set fire to thee private cars in Ashkona area near Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, a pickup van at Naya Bazar in Old Dhaka and a CNG-run auto-rickshaw in Kalshi of Mirpur.
Law enforcers also rounded up a pro-blockade activist with four crude bombs from Kalshi in Mirpur.
Narayanganj
Opposition activists have triggered off bomb explosions and resorted to vandalism in Narayanganj on the second day of the countrywide Opposition blockade. Police arrested six people including Narayanganj Metropolitan BNP acting general secretary Suruj Zaman during picketing in Modonpur on Wednesday.
Police fired in the air to disperse blockade campaigners when they tried to create trouble at Sonagaon and Siddhirganj around 6am, Sonargaon Police Station OC Atiqur Rahman said. Witnesses said the opposition activists blocked the Dhaka-Chittagong highway and Dhaka-Narayanganj link road with burning tyres and tree logs.
They also damaged several vehicles and exploded handmade bombs at that time. Clashes erupted when police intervened, leaving ten injured.
Sirajganj
Two BNP supporters died during tripartite clashes between blockade supporters, Awami League activists and police in Sirajganj's Belcucci upazila on Wednesday.
The incident took place on the second day of the BNP-led opposition 18-party alliance-called 48-hour nationwide blockade programme. The deceased were preliminarily identified as Masum Billah, 42, and Abdul Jalil, 40, both supporters of BNP, police said.
Witnesses said BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami supporters brought out a procession in Mukundagati Bazar area around 1:30am. Belcucci police Officer-in-Charge Abdul Hai said the duo were hacked to death during the chaos. However, he did not elaborate further.
Satkhira
Jamaat-e-Islami supporters in Satkhira attacked a combined group of policemen, RAB and BGB troopers early on Wednesday. One Jamaat supporter was killed when security forces fired in self defence.
The incident took place in Agardari area of Sadar upazila around 4am, police said. The deceased was identified as Shamsur Rahman, 36, son of Abdul Mazed from Satkhira Sadar.
Jamaat supporters went on the rampage after the killing, looting houses and business establishments of local Hindus and Awami League supporters.
Jamaat activists attacked the law-keepers who had fanned out in the area looking for trouble-makers responsible for violence during recent Opposition backed shutdowns and blockade. Jamaat-Shibir activists gathered thousands of people by loudspeaker announcements after the security forces arrived at Agordari.
They started to hurl handmade bombs and brick-bats towards the securitymen and tried to block roads with logs to cut them off.
Police were compelled to fire 150 rounds of rubber bullets, live gunfire and teargas shells, the OC added. "We heard that one died, but we could not recover the body."
Satkhira Jamaat's chief Maulana Abdul Khaleque Mandal identified the man killed in firing as one of their activist Shamsur Rahman. He said some more supporters were injured. The dead body was taken to the victims home, he added.
Barisal
Activists of the Opposition 18-party alliance clashed with police at Barisal on Wednesday, the second day of 48-hour road, rail, and waterways blockade. Police arrested one of them after the clash.
Barisal police's Deputy Commissioner (North) Abu Saleh Mohammad Raihan said a procession of blockade supporters tried to damage vehicles on the Dhaka-Barisal highway around 8.30am. The police charged with batons to disperse them.
Minutes later, the Opposition activists started pelting the police with brickbats. The police fired rubber bullets and lobbed tear-gas canisters to bring the situation under control, the police official told the media.
Chandpur
In Chandpur, Rail communication of Chandpur with other parts of the country halted as blockade supporters uprooted rail slippers in Uyaruk area on Chandpur-Laksam rail route early Wednesday.
Besides, 18-party leaders blocked road putting tree logs at Debpur and bakila points on Chandpur-Comilla highway.
The blockade started from 6:00am Tuesday (November 26) and will continue to 6:00am Thursday demanding restoration of caretaker government and protesting the announcement of poll schedule.
Roads, waterways and railway remained under the blockade programme.
Additional law enforcers along with Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) personnel were deployed around the country to thwart further sabotage.
