Re: [mukto-mona] [Mukto-Mona Writers' Corner] 'INDONESIAN MUSLIM ALLAH'

This is an old issue. First of all it is in MALAYSIA not Indonesia.

I am coping the short article here to add my comments on it.

MALAYSIAN MUSLIM ALLAH

Malaysia's Ulema have recently issued fatwa that the word 'Allah' cannot be used in Malaysian Bible and seized hundreds of such Bibles. In other words, 'Allah' word has been patented by the Muslims. Malaysia is heading for more Islamic intolerance. Islam recognizes the people of Books (Christians & Jews) and label Qur'an as continuity and ultimate culmination of old and new testaments. But Malaysian Ulema have decreed that the Arabic word 'Allah' is the exclusive monopoly of Muslims alone.

Beyond the sign of Islamic intolerance, the said fatwa reflects the ignorance and Arabian slavery by Malaysian Ulema. Any idiot on earth even knows that, 'Allah' is a pre-Islamic Arabic word of same meaning as in Islam. Muhammad simply borrowed it for Islam. The word was not revealed from the heaven like Qur'an.

>>>>>>>>>>> It is probably not a sign of intolerance but protectionism. Before Bhaskarda start calling people "Idiot", he should study history of Islam FIRST.

There is NO "Pre-Islamic" era. Islam started with the first couple (Adam and Eve) came to this world. The usage of the word "Allah" is also old. It goes back many years before prophet Muhammad (PBUH) came to this world (Here Bhaskarda is correct). Islam is the "Adi-dharma" or mother religion of all. Over time in some areas the core message got distorted/misunderstood for various reason and our Creator sent messengers with "Authentic message" to bring us back to the "Right path".

Therefore, the comment about the term was "Borrowed" is factually incorrect. We have various misunderstandings about Islamic history among Muslims and non-Muslims of Bangladesh (Probably sub-continent and east ward). The incorrect statement about Islam is a reflection of that.

The intension of Malaysian Christians, in using the word 'Allah', is very simple. They want to use the term which is in the dominant culture of the country. In Bengali Bible, the Bengali word 'Ishwar', which is nearest to the meaning of word 'God', is used. By and large, Christians live by observing local culture and traditions. They even offer prayer in mother tongue (local language).

>>>>>>>>>>>> Here lies the main issue (The INTENTION of Malaysian Christians). The intention of Malaysian Christian missionaries (NOT most Malay Christians) was to mislead bunch of semi-educated Muslim and convert them into Christianity. Not only they use the term "Allah" but also use Arabic calligraphy (To mislead common non-Arabic Muslims). Which is the MAIN reason for the objection.

Personally I do not support such objections but just want to point out the ACTUAL reason.

The Malaysian Ulema have again proved that cultural slavery of Arabia is the life line of Islam. And they are the slaves of Arabia.

>>>>>>>>>>>> Bhaskarda does not know that, Arabs are VERY accepting of the usage of the term "Allah" by non-Muslims. There are millions of Coptic Christians in Egypt and the Arabic Bible uses the term Allah liberally for centuries.

Therefore, ONCE again our Mukto-mona "Self appointed expert" is WRONG on this issue.

The close corollaries of the fatwa are: HE is an Arab WHO simply belongs to Arabic Muslims and all non-Arab Muslims should imitate Arabs to be Muslims. The remote corollaries are: Arabic 'Allah' is located in Arab only; even HE cannot dare to go and stay in any non-Arab community and HE does not like non-Muslims to use the Arabic word 'Allah'. What a pathetic kind of self imposed slavery!

>>>>>>>>>>>>> While it is true some Muslims goes beyond being Muslims and tries too much to follow Arab "Culture" (Which is NOT a requirement of Islam) but anyone who likes to spread such simpleton message to understand every issue is equally wrong.

The Prime Minister of Malaysia, Najib Razak is allegely behind all this to divert majority people's anger for his subsidy cuts which are likely to put financial pressure on common citizen. In all Islamic countries, Islam has been serving the vested interests of ruling class since the death of Prophet.
I, under no situation, am endorsing Christianity here.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>> I do not follow internal politics of Malaysia, so I cannot say definitively WHY Najib Razzak is supporting this. It could be he understood the process of distortion/misguide needed to be addressed OR he is using this issue to get some political mileage.

The statement about Islam is serving ruling class is a ignorant opinion of Islam (And history). The biggest draw of Islam is equality and dignity for all.

SOME Christian missionaries uses money, distortion etc to convert people. Missionary efforts by Christians pretty much failed in most Muslim majority countries but it has seen some success in non-Arabic speaking countries like Malaysia, Indonesia exploiting/distorting the teachings of Islam and general lack of knowledge about Islam among Muslims.

It is worth noting that, albeit most Pakistanis think highly of their "Islamic culture" in Pakistan but since independence of Pakistan the missionaries gained most converts there compare to the British Raj era. So it is best to learn Islam in a language you understand and practicing and UNDERSTANDING the message are equally important.

Just parroting some dua without understanding meaning and context is a spiritless exercise. IN order to "Enjoy" Islam Muslims need to understand Islam and when this happens non-Muslims will not fear Muslims anymore.

This last part is one of the major challenges we face in Bangladesh.

This issue was discussed by scholars of Islam as well. Please click on the following link to read a short interview of a Malaysian scholar.

Chandra Muzaffar is Malaysia's best-known public intellectual. A professor at the Universiti Sains Malaysia, Penang, he  recently assumed the position of Chairman of the Board of Trustees of 1 Malaysia, a foundation set up by some concerned citizens to promote harmony between Malaysia's various ethnic and religious communities.

In this interview with Yoginder Sikand, he talks about the ongoing controversy in Malaysia in the wake of a recent court ruling permitting the country's Christians (and other non-Muslims) to use the term 'Allah', which many Malaysian Muslims fiercely oppose.
