Re: [mukto-mona] Pope Francis says Big Bang theory does not contradict role of God

"...science and religion are incongruous and incompatible..."

Yes, I know, science is fact based, and religion is not. If science contradicts religion, religion should adapt to science, not the other way around. That's what Pope is saying. If religion does not adapt to science – its followers will keep believing in falsehood - such as Sun rotates around the Earth. That can't be good for any religion. He is not being clever here, he is being practical and truthful to his followers. This reveals that he is not a blind believer.

You can say that you do not believe in religion, but – you cannot say that - you do not believe in science. Unfortunately, science has limitations; it cannot provide answers to many of our quests. Religion can fill those voids temporarily, until science find answers. In that sense, these two subjects are complimentary to one another. Many ancient Hindu scriptures contain ideas about space-warfare, and knowledge of astronomy, which can help scientists.

I fully agree with Dr Bain that science and religion are incongruous and incompatible. Science is evidence based discipline whereas religion is primarily the blind faith without any evidence. The Pope is a very clever person who needs to look after his world-wide religious empire and is now trying to put a square peg in a round hole.

I don't agree with Dr. Roy's logic here. Religions contradicting science is normal, as most of them did not come with any systematic analysis, logic or scrutiny.

As for the Pope, the fellow is smart enough to try to provide some long-term safety to the business that he is the CEO of right now.

Pope is exactly right;
religion should not
contradict science. In fact, it does not. Only some
brain-dead believers
contradict religion and science.
Most religions say - everything
happens as per God's
wills. Following this logic, it should not be difficult to
think that - Big
Bang was one such event that God needed to start his new
creations (point-zero). I like the accommodative nature of
the Pope. Extending
this logic further, one can say – all good ideas do come
to those who are chosen
by God, and scientists are the chosen ones to convey those
messages, since dull-headed
believers are no good for such complex
messages.  Jiten Roy
