Re: [mukto-mona] Death of Religion is Near

You are probably right, Dr. Das. I should forget about religion just like most people. But, I can't, because - most current events, now-a-days, have something to do with the religion.
Also, I can see the invisible walls of religion, trapping human beings in different compartments; it is so hard to surmount those walls. These walls bothers me a lot. I wish I had the power to set these people free; but I can't. So, I just look at the world without religion; I know, it will come someday.

Barking a wrong tree also means peeling it. Dr. Roy would be better off without obsession on religion.

Dr. Roy, you are angry again. Why do you have to lose civility when you are losing the game? It is not only I, those who are calling your thesis a wishful thinking are also "barking", probably more loudly. It is immaterial whether any one including myself has read the original article. Everybody has based his reaction to your assertion "Death of religion is near, and it is a must".
Even by citing an example of your own choice, you yourself have refuted your own claim. Why don't you look around the world and review your thesis?
God bless you. I am referring to your own God.

Mr. Chakraborty, did you read the article in the link I have given at the end of my original post? Definitely not. If you did, you would know that - this is not my view alone.

"We're putting an end to religion: Richard Dawkins, Bill Maher and the exploding new American secularism...."

You are barking at the wrong tree.

In this forum I mentioned this before. In one of his articles written in sixteens Dr. Ahmed Sharif, a confirmed atheist throughout his life, opined that man would never say goodbye to religion. After half s century his words are still valid. When he wrote the article, USSR, an atheist country, was very dominant in every front. But we see a different picture since the USSR slides disintegrated in about a quarter century ago and thereby bolstering his conjecture.

Dr. Jiten Roy is saying that death of religion is "near". He has not given any timeline. Within One generation? Or two? He is too optimistic and hence too illogical and too unrealistic. I will request him to look at the third world countries like India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, etc.

The funny thing in Dr. Roy's belief is that while religion will die soon, God will survive! If you don't need a religion, why would you need a God? How can you make that God secular or irreligious? There must be clashes among the Gods. The God you have defined for yourself will not be the same God as will be defined by other irreligious people assuming that in near future every one will become irreligious. Sounds like an oxymoron.

I do not wish to see the beginning of another interminable exchange of words. Here are however some thoughts on the subject.
If there are significant trends towards the easing of the grip of religion in Islamic countries, I have yet to see them. In Dhaka Friday prayer congregations spill out of mosque premises onto streets, blocking traffic. I never saw such spectacle in my youth. And this despite a huge expansion of mosques all over the country. I do take into account of the fast growing population. Don't forget either the growing influence of the Tablig Jamaat, and the exploding number of devotees in the annual Ijtema at Tongi that, not incidentally, may turn into an environmental peril in the near future. Last, for now, the number of hijab-clad women is rising inexorably. Decline of religion these?
I also see growing influence of radical Islam in the west itself. I have seen a video clip of Muslims, perhaps all Born in the UK, shouting "down with UK" in the streets of London ! Muslims in a Nordic country were seen saying Friday prayer in the street, blocking traffic.
Whether or not the western world is confused about secularism, far more important is the perception of the word in our society. Secularism is still seen as irreligiousness, if not Godlessness, by a large section of the population in Bangladesh as well as elsewhere in the Muslim world.

It's not a crystal ball prediction, it's a logical prediction. If you read the article, you will know church attendances are dwindling. It has been a worry of the church. This could be due to many factors, such as, conscious people have no trust in Priests, or they know better. The same thing will happen to other religious institutions, in fact, it is happening. More and more people are losing faith in religion. I never dreamed of seeing a single atheist coming out of  the  Islamic faith in my life, but - now I see thousands, risking their lives to give up religion. Don't you see the trend?
Also, I am not talking about Madrassa students; they are minority. I am talking about the majority, who have access to those devices, and they are finding out everything about their religion. Religious Mumbo-Jumbos from the religious figures are going to be difficult to sell to these people in the future. And, this is not based on my crystal ball prediction, it is actually my logical conclusion.
