Re: [mukto-mona] FW: Nude Photo Revolutionary Calendar to mark Int'l Women's Day

Not long ago, before dress was invented, did fig leaf cover all the erogenous zones?

I can not fathom how nudity is an expression of women's rights. This provocative act might get attention, but I do not think that such attentions could be serious. I think women should dress decently, and assert their rights. After all, they are mothers, daughters, sisters, wives, and all kinds of caring relations of men. Even the cruelest of men had to bow to, and ask for compassion from, some women during their lifetime. I am sure, women can get their due respect without the cheap attention that nudity gets.

Of course, excessive covering of women's body for their protection is like punishing the victims while tolerating the criminals. There is no lasting wisdom in it. It is a failure that is unbecoming of the most intelligent lifeform on Earth.

Religions have proven to be an intractable problem on this issue and on many other issues. That is why I say, bring the religions to the realm of common sense of humans, as opposed to treating them as mandates that must be followed.

Today is the Woman's Day. This is the right day to discuss about woman-rights in the society.  I used to wonder why woman want to walk around wearing such skimpy dresses in the summer, while men walk around covering most of their bodies. I used to think that woman's physique is probably worthy of display, while man's physique are not good enough for exhibition. Now I understand that my assertion is not totally right; it's also about woman's rights. I think – nudity steams from woman's revolt against societal taboos. Such revolt started in 1960s with the onset of feminist movement.
When I look at Bangladesh, on this day, I see a different trend once again. It's going in the opposite direction. Every day, I see more and more young girls are being attacked if they are not hiding their beauty under their garbs. From the news, it appears that organized campaign of teasing and attacks may have been going on towards those women. Are these attacks on women to make a point, I wonder? I am looking for an answer to this question.
I left Bangladesh more than 30 years ago. At that time, people used to demand harsh punishment for the attackers and teasers. But, now, I hear demand for more veils for women as the solution to these violent attacks and cruel teasing on them. I do not know, for sure, who are behind these orchestrated attacks on women, but – I can only guess who are driving this orchestrated campaign against women in Bangladesh. I would like to urge the law and order administrations to investigate this issue with outmost priority and publish the findings ASAP.

I do support this aspect of the 'scream' of Muslim women as a protest that comes with an underlying pain and suffering of injustice without an end in sight. Muslim patriarchy is now resorting to overt forms of public violence with a clear objective to PUNISH any kind of revolt against oppression of women. Look what is happening in Bangladesh!                   Farida Majid  The calendar is the idea of campaigner Maryam Namazie to support Aliaa Magda Elmahdy and join her 'screams against a society of violence, racism, sexism, sexual harassment and hypocrisy'. Namazie says: 'What with Islamism and the religious right being obsessed with women's bodies and demanding that we be veiled, bound, and gagged, nudity breaks taboos and is an important form of resistance.'
