Subject: Two-day Jamaat strike ends in a whimper

Miscreants torched a train compartment at the Kamalapur Railway Station on Monday afternoon. A home-made bomb exploded at around noon in front of the Sonargaon Hotel where the visiting Indian President Pranab Mukherjee is staying.

The pro-shutdown supporters took out flash processions at various points of the capital Dhaka but the law enforcers intervened to disperse them off. The number of intra-city vehicles increased as the day progressed. Work at public and private offices also went ahead without any reported interruption.

The number of vehicles on the capital's streets was noticeable. More private cars were out on the streets compared to Sunday.

However, long-distance buses remained grounded.

The law enforcers were seen patrolling key points of the capital.

The Shahbagh demonstrators had taken out processions in Dhaka rejecting the radical party's strike call. Several thousand people took part in the procession and chanted slogans demanding death for convicted war criminals.

Several affiliates of the ruling Awami League also took out anti-shutdown processions in the city.

The activists of Jamaat and its student front, Islami Chhatra Shibir, detonated a crude bomb in Kamalapur in the morning. Police fired several rounds to bring the situation under control. In the skirmish, a Grade-8 student of the Bangladesh Bank High School, Junaedul Haq Tonmoy, was injured.

Shotgun splinters hit him on the left side of his face. Tonmoy was standing in his veranda when the pitched battles were being fought.

A police officer said the 13-year-old had been admitted to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH).

A youth was injured allegedly while making crude bombs at a house in the capital's Nayabazar. Mosharraf Hossain Bokul, 26, was admitted to the DMCH.

The party called for the 48-hour nonstop strike after the first war crimes tribunal sentenced party's Naeb-e-Ameer Sayedee to death for crimes committed during the nation's War of Independence in 1971. The radical party rejected the verdict and unleashed a violent spree.

At least 17 people, including policemen, were killed on Sunday during clashes in several districts.

Another two persons were killed in Satkhira's Kolaroa upazila on Monday as the pro-shutdown activists clashed with the law enforcers.

A youth was killed in Sirajganj when the Jamaat and Shibir activists smashed the Shaheed Minar in Rangpur's Badarganj in the presence of the police.

The BNP, Jamaat's key ally, had called for a daylong shutdown for Tuesday protesting against the deaths during Thursday's Jamaat mayhem. The main opposition party blamed the government for the killing.

জনকণ্ঠ রিপোর্ট ॥ রাজধানীর প্রধান প্রধান সড়কগুলোতে যানজটের দৃশ্য নতুন কিছু নয়। তবে জনমনে আতঙ্ক সৃষ্টিকারী জামায়াতের ডাকা হরতালেও যদি নগরীর বিভিন্ন রাজপথে এ দৃশ্য দেখা যায়, তাহলে সহজেই বোঝা যায় হরতালের ন্যূনতম প্রভাবও পড়েনি রাজধানীতে। অর্থাৎ আরও একটি ফ্লপ হরতালের কর্মসূচী শেষ করল দেশবিরোধী সংগঠন জামায়াত। তবে নগরীর দু'একটি জায়গায় জঙ্গী সংগঠনের মতোই দুই-এক মিনিটের ঝটিকা মিছিল, মিছিল থেকে ভাংচুর ও চোরাগোপ্তা হামলা চালিয়ে আতঙ্ক সৃষ্টির চেষ্টা করা হয়। হরতাল চলাকালে দুপুরে কাওরানবাজারসংলগ্ন হোটেল . . .
