Re: [mukto-mona] FW: মিতা হকের বাঙ্গালীয়ানা ও মরু-সাম্রাজ্যবাদ

Everybody in the forum has criticized Mita Huque. Fatemolla has also been criticized to various extents. Now let us focus on the main issue which is borkha, hijab, or even veil, let alone keeping our women confined within the four walls. As the society is progressing, we are noticing more and more liberation of women--liberation in all respects. Relieving her of excessive burden of clothings aimed at maintaining her dignity and sanctity of the society as well is one such liberation. According to Fatemolla preachers of islam have never recommended borkha. What is your comment on that?

What is your opinion on this matter? Don't you think that borkha is not only unnecessary in the context of Bangladesh, it also creates many hazards, and as such, a reform movement may not be a bad idea?

I am not in favor of forcing any one to quit borkha or hijab or veil. But personally I am against advocating for any such thing and I will point out the demerits of such things. The veil of my grand mother was longer than that of my mother. My sisters do not use veil except in rare occasions. My nieces do not even wear saris.

People keep beard or wear long clothes covering most part of the body for style, fashion, or even for some kind of religious or nonreligious passion. Rabindranath is a bright example. Probably he wanted to look like a baul or a poet. Such cases are exceptions and these are according to their personal choices. But this cannot be a general rule for the society. We need more and more women's liberation if we really want to progress and prosper.

The main point of my post was to note my strong objection to Mita Huq and her Pakistani style of thinking. Because only incredibly idiotic people would talk like this.

Nawab Faizunnessa was a devout Muslima and still very progressive. She built schools for boys and girls at home and built rest house for the hajis in the city of Mecca. She was brave enough to return her initial award to British Raj (Of Begum) and later accepted the "Nawab" tile which was mostly reserved for men.

Therefore, my point is being a good Muslim means being inspired to be a good human being. One can be very progressive and good Muslim at the same time.

People like Mita Huq talk without any knowledge of the subject she was discussing. Hope we learn to elevate true scholars to lead us to more tolerant and non-judgmental future for our country.

Shalom!

I did not know that Nawab Faizunnessa Chowdhurani of Paschimgaon, Laksham was the first woman writer of Bangla history, thanks for the information. I knew about her work - 'Rupjalal'. My mother passed her Matriculation examination from Faizunnessa Girls High School (Comilla)

In 1931 two class VIII students of the school Shant and Suniti shot the district magistrate of the district of Tippera (presnt Comialla).

I have very high respect for Mita Huq as a singer and also subscribe to her view on how Rabindra-Sangeet needs to be sung. But looks like she talks without thinking. I agree to Ms. Majid's observation: "It is dangerous at this juncture to pontificate on 'what is Bangalee' or what is not.  It creates the unnecessary binary opposition of Musulman v. Bangalee.  Yet, we know that it is a fact that there is no such thing as "non-Bangalee razakar".  The ones who are facing trial for crimes committed in 1971 at the Dhaka War Crimes Tribunal right now are all Bangalee."

I feel that over-enthusiasm on part of some ultra-secularists actually creates problem for secular force. Fundamentalists just jump for every opportuninty and also they are masters in twisting, exaggerating and falsifying things.

Mita's family comes from a leftist background, I wonder if she knows about Maulana Ahmedur Rahman Azmi of NAP (the same party that once belonged to late Wahidul Huq, Mita's uncle).

What Mita Huq said was incredibly stupid. I did not expect an educated person saying such a thing. If beard, cap and hijab are signs of non-Bengali, then Rabindranath Tagore and our own shubash Dutta (Film director) were not "Real Bengalis". He comments sounded like stories I head about Pakistanis who asked us if we were Bengalis or Muslims. I think we are both and as long these choices remain FREE to all and not forced upon anyone, this is a private matter (Falls into freedom of thoughts and expression). It is none of her damn business. It is ironic that, Mita Huq would sound like half educated Pakistanis in this day and age!! It seems she has NO connection with majority people of this country. One of my family members were part of the procession of the 51 (Language movement). He is very old today and very religious as well. I do not think most of the time these identities cause any major conflicts. It also pretty sad that, in this day and age an educated lady dared to "Tell" women about what to dress. If women feel good in wearing hijab, we HAVE to respect her choice. If someone does not want to, we have to respect that as well. Fatemolla is delusional and it is better to ignore his illogical ideas. In a free society men and women can decide how they practice their faith and what to dress. As long they remain peaceful, we HAVE to leave them alone. The first women writer of Bangla history Nawab Faizunnesa (of Laksham, Comilla) mostly remained inside her house, ruled over thousands of subject and remained a devout Muslima at the same time. She was a trail blazer of her time and her family is well respected by local even today (She established schools and colleges for men and women). Maybe Mita Huq should stick with her music and stay away from subjects she is capable to understand. Shalom!

Fatemolla (Hasan Mahmud of Canada)r bull shit.  It is dangerous at this juncture to pontificate on 'what is Bangalee' or what is not.  It creates the unnecessary binary opposition of Musulman v.
