[ALOCHONA] Apparel exporters sense plot

Apparel exporters sense plot

Apparel manufacturers on Thursday alleged that 'a quarter' was trying
to upset the growth of the largest export sector.

They made the allegation at a joint meeting of three associations of
the sector – Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers' and Exporters'
Association (BGMEA), Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers' and Exporters'
Association (BKMEA) and Bangladesh Textile Mills Association (BTMA)
--.

"A certain quarter is trying to frustrate the expansion of this
flourishing sector," BGMEA president Shafiul Islam Mahiuddin told the
meeting.

The manufacturers said if the conspiracy continues, it will lead to
shutdown of garment factories.

They said unavailability of new gas connection, high interest rates,
increase in Chittagong port tax and rise in goods preservation cost in
the port's inland container terminal, and the Department of
Environment's raids on factories are affecting the sector.

They pointed out that even though textile exports are increasing, the
industry is losing its competitiveness in the international market.

Some of the government's 'immature' decisions have created fresh panic
among the manufacturers, the meeting heard.

Asked if they thought that someone inside the government is linked
with the conspiracy, Mahiuddin replied: "Somebody might work against
the government from within a democratic government. Creating economic
instability is the main conspiracy against the government."

He said: "We want specific answers. Why the garment sector is becoming
more and more vulnerable and who are responsible for this situation?
There is lack of coordination. Funds are not being used despite their
being available. Who are creating this hindrance?"

Referring to the environment directorate's fining factories for not
installing effluent treatment plants, the BGMEA president said: "Only
fining factories cannot make them use ETP unless it is installed
centrally."
