[ALOCHONA] Is the administration falling apart?

Is the administration falling apart?

Shamsher Chowdhury

They are killing people on the streets, into peoples' bedrooms, people are dying at the hands of murderers, people are being killed in so-called cross fires, working journalists are beaten to death while at work in the fields, young women are taking their lives out of guilt and shame with eave teasers stalking them day in and day out. Day by day the power and the water situation are becoming acute. The vandalism and misrule at public universities continue, resulting in the closure of a number of universities. Yet we continue to be elated.

Often people are confused. They are asking as to whose government is it anyway? Is this a Peoples' Republic? While we are exalted with our successes in long marches; the galloping of price continues and no one seems to be bothered about it. The majority people of the country have become destitute in their own country. People of a country are the most important of its resources. In a democracy, people and their welfare should be the principal concern of an elected government. It is not enough to say that the government is with the people, the reflection of which also has to be seen on the ground both in spirit and action. What this regime is doing: is divide and rule and in the process following the suicidal path of isolation.

As time passes it is becoming extremely intolerant to opposing views. In these days of high tech electronic and other forms of technologies available trying to stifle the free flow of information can be self defeating. It has been in the past, it is going to be so at present and in the future too. The problem with us is, alongside others our rulers are also suffering from a crisis of identity. Frankly can one tell us as to what system of government is running the administration? Is it democracy, is it autocracy or socialist?

This is a country for the rich, the powerful and the well to do, leave side the certification by the visiting friends of Bangladesh from several countries of the world. The truth is they do not live here and are not aware of today's Bangladesh. They have come here to collect their accolades and "look" at a brave nation they knew some 40 years ago whose people fought for liberating their beloved country from foreign occupation. Forty years have passed since those days of our unique and historical struggle for independence when these extraordinary foreign nationals out of goodness of their hearts provided support to our War of Independence in no uncertain terms. The expression of a nation's gratitude therefore was long overdue and now we are happy to see that they have received recognition which is not only well deserved but also a national obligation fulfilled.

There are people who are often carried away by the ruling party's achievements over the past three years, the say we have made good progress in education. One wonders as to what education they are referring to. Yes, great progress has been made whereby the success in O and A Level examinations crossed all previous records. In the meantime, the successful candidates are preparing themselves to go overseas. For all practical purposes our education is stuck in this groove of O and A levels since one by one the campuses of the universities have become centres for all kinds of violence and vandalism and their academic environment has been totally destroyed. A number of key public universities remain closed continually through out the year. Education in real sense of the term is the backbone of a nation.

A vital segment of our education; the moral and ethical aspects of it have been completely destroyed. Indulging in lies, deception and fraudulent acts have become our second nature. We have become extremely arrogant and a slave of the psyche, that we are immortal and would go on forever. I say may Allah have mercy on us. Let good sense prevail with our rulers.

I am indeed distraught with these rising incidents of lives being lost due to traffic accidents and innocent people vanishing in their watery graves. Can the administration do nothing other than providing excuses? Imagine after the 149 lives were lost in the Meghna river the other day not even a prayer was held in memory of those at our mosques for the departed souls. Deaths due to road accidents have now become a subject of routine news item that decorate the pages of our print media and occasionally being broadcast by the electronic media. Bengalis once known for being soft and mild in nature are hard to find these days. We were once famously known for our "plain living and high thinking" that no longer exist.
