Re: [mukto-mona] Fw: A Must See! - Repression of non-Muslims in Bangladesh

Thanks to Mr. Sitangshu Guha and HBCUC for their work on exposing minority repression in Bangladesh. I particularly support their demand for a Hate Crime Law. I am sure, it would not only help the non-Muslims of Bangladesh, it would help the innocent Muslims also. The criminals who hate people based upon things like religion and ethnicity are also likely to commit crimes against people of their own religion/ethnicity. The hate-mongers would find ways to distinguish themselves from people who are otherwise their own kind, if that provides an excuse to commit their crimes. Thus, I think people, including Muslims, who care about a better Bangladesh would support this demand.

 

Over the years, I have maintained that talking about human rights violations would not actually do much if citizenship rights are lacking. To stop crimes against non-Muslims in Bangladesh, the non-Muslims need to be in civil as well as military positions of power. That is why I think political forces, such as Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council, can be more effective than apolitical human rights organizations, such as Human Rights Congress for Bangladesh Minorities, in gaining human rights for the non-Muslims.

 

I know, in Bangladesh there is no shortage of hate-mongers, including Islamic fanatics, Muslim brotherhood fanatics, and pseudo-secular intellectuals. They want to portray HBCUC in a communal light, a la the old Muslim League, ignoring the fact that HBCUC is a union of three minority groups, and has no intention of creating something like a country for the Hindus, Buddhists and Christians. They just want proper human and citizenship rights for all, including Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists and Christians.

 

In any case, my professional and family life does not allow me much time for human/citizenship rights work at this time. But I do appreciate people who are active.

Among other things, they wanted to teach the infidels that it was not good to eat during day-time during the month of Ramadan in a 'Muslim country'.   In 1996, a Chakma woman was abducted by Bangladesh military, and her whereabouts are not known even today.   In 2003, Bengali settlers committed atrocities at Mahalchari in the presence of soldiers.   In 2010, two tribal students were killed by Bangladesh military.   Again these are only a few examples. While I read many more and heard about many more from phone conversations with relatives and friends, I am not a repository of news from Bangladesh; nor could I spend enough time to be a human/minority rights activist.   Let me stop wasting more of my time here, and end for now with another comment/question for Mr. Rahman. You seem to be a Muslim who cares about the rights of the non-Muslims of Bangladesh.
