Looks like for now the government has concentrated on banning (very justifiably) Jamat-Shibir only, not all religion-based political parties. Eventually religion based politics will have to be banned constitutionally. The members of the so called religious parties are no more religious, if religious at all in the true sense, than the common people. Our people know well these elements. They are undemocratic, against women's rights, and backward in thinking. People will never fight for the political rights of these parties. Banning of these parties will cause no harm to Islam in Bangladesh, it will rather help implement the great ideals of Islam in a progressive manner. Absence of Islam in politics must not be lamented. Our progressive parties need courage and political will to act towards this direction.

>>>>>>>>>> You are right. Awami League is in a "Catch 22" situation (Shakhet karat). If it tries to ban "Islam" from politics, it would be suicidal in next election and will empower religious based parties even more.

The "Fair" and best solution is to separate "VIOLENCE" from our politics. To implement that, it will require all parties to change it's current structure. Right now, they [ All major parties] depend on armed gangs to "Take care" of local issues.

As a Muslim, I can clearly say, Islam is not "Politics" as we know it and our current "Islamic" minded parties DO act like average political parties with armed gangs to promote their "Political agendas" [ Generally going to power]. In this regard there is no difference between our average Islamic parties and communist parties or any others.

Trial of those who killed, raped and looted our people during 71 is popular. However from legal point, street demand stays within political sphere. It is our government who has to take steps towards trial of alleged criminals.

Over enthusiasm of some government official may spoil the cause. Technically government and court has to stay "Neutral" in the process and people have to be given fair chance to defend themselves in court of law (It is not politically popular).

You are right that, we have successful model in our collective history of Muslim rulers who were accepted to most common people and perceived as "Fair rulers". So while it is near impossible to divorce our Muslim identity from political arena but it is possible to rule fairly despite being Muslim rulers of our land.

Islam puts a lot of focus on fairness to all and it is enough for us form our own model of democracy where all people will have guaranteed fundamental rights without separating their religious identities.

For example, in Bangladesh "Islamic education" is seen as inferior system by Muslims and non-Muslims alike. But I strongly feel it can offer solution to many problems we are facing. For example a recent report rated "Islamic schools of UK among best in the nation".

Similarly in order to see the best of Islam based parties, we have to first get current parties out of their "UnIslamic mold" and bring them closer to Islamic ideals. ONLY then, we can see beautiful potential of Islam.

Islam means we stay true to Qur'an and Sunnah. It does NOT mean we have to imitate near failed state like Pakistan while we speak about Islam. There are successful models of Islamic systems around the world, we can take their "Best practices" to restructure our religious parties.

Shalom!

Been watching the recent debate and turns on the Shahbag movement. The present demand now is to ban religion based parties in politics. The demand has emerged from the streets and is therefore extremely powerful from peoples' content & value point. I would like to submit three important points for consideration. 1. The moment Jamat wil be banned there would sprout a myriad of political formations with different names and the process of banning all of these would push the government in a never ending wild goose chase in implementing the law- this has been the experience with Islamic militant organizations in Pakistan and India. 2. In the history of the world and in contemporary politics no religious based political formation exists independently without the support or supplementing by some other secular political party. In Bangladesh it is BNP, and no law can ban it. The Islamic state was promulgated not by Jamaat but by its the then so called arch-rival the Jatio Party. 3. These religious parties take shelter in religious places and hegemonise the thought of the innocent momins. These are funded by foreign fundamentalists who may or may not use the same political line in their own country.

Thus there is a implementational hindrance that can never be circumvented. What probably is required is a very high task of continuous cultural movement against this phenomenon and banning religious usage or religious artefacts from the political discourse. ISLAM actually offers the best bedrock for that because this probably is the only religion which through the scriptures has banned using religion and/or dragging religious artefacts in mundane administration or politics. The Pathan and Mughal rule of India successfully implemented that as is now proved by recent historians. Come politics they never allowed religion to creep into policy making. [old histories by Hindu writers are all communalistic barring Romesh Dutt and Ramesh Mazumdar] Any political formation should be taken to court for using religious symbols and artefacts in politics.
