RE: [mukto-mona] For publication: Shabag and emerging questions ...

There is only one reason to oppose the death penalty, and that is - whether wrong people get the punishment. That's all. There is no other justification for opposing the death penalty; emotions have no place in justice system. If the guilt is proven beyond doubt, like the case of Ajmal Kasab and others, there is no reason for opposition, except out of emotion. I often hear from the people who oppose death penalty that - we are better than killers. That's naivety; actually everybody will probably kill someone, if they can, to protect his/her own life or the lives of loved ones; that's a normal human reaction. Therefore, don't try to pretend that you are special, like Jesus Christ or Sree-Choitanya, who said if someone slaps you on one cheek, put the other one in front of him also. You will not say this if your relatives were killed by some of those killers, waiting in the death rows.

But, I agree on the method of execution by hanging; I do not like this method.

    Dear Saurav,
Your thoughtful note with its underlying encouragement for the Shahbagh movement is much appreciated.  I am fully aware that you in India had been dealing with the hanging (fanshi) of Ajmal Kasab and Afzal Guru and found them to be deeply troubling.  I am glad that young people like you were moved by those events and questioned their moral values.  Personally I am against capital punishment and find this hanging by the neck a cruel and barbaric mode of sentencing for a crime.

I was taken by the wisdom of your following statement:

<<  Divorcing politics from religious fundamentalism is not enough. We have to understand why people adhere to religious fundamentalism in the historical and social contexts. Political ideology is shaped by several factors and reflects the social reality. The present situation is a case of political hegemony and its answer lies in how the country's citizens are prepared to emerge as critical citizens and if they are committed to ensure social justice and equality. >>

Please come to visit Bangladesh someday soon.

                 Yours appreciatively
