Re: [mukto-mona] [Politiconomy] Sheikh Hasina's CNN Interview

Considering her background, she did pretty OK. What lacks from our leaders is that they do not perform very well when they are put on spot. Only Indira Gandhi was the exception!
Sharp intelligence and language are their main problems. Yes, more home work with mock practice would have been better.

One of the toughest reporters of one giant news media of one of the most powerful countries of the world interviews the head of the government of one of the poorest and least powerful countries of the world. Did this hard reality impact the interview negatively? In my opinion, although there was a little uneasiness on both the sides, both the interviewer and the interviewee showed expected toughness.  I don't know if Hasina did any homework before facing the interview. I will say Hasina did a very good job. She had to play multiple roles : CEO of an independent country and the political party in power, and also the head of the government of a third world country which is both a victim and beneficiary of globalization. In my opinion she played all the three roles pretty well. She pretty well justified the steps taken by her government to punish the criminals and also to improve the conditions of the garment workers. This should have positive impact on the acceptability of AL. In response to one question she clearly mentioned that Rana stole the land when BNP was in power. Ammanpour as a tough interviewer tried to project a hopeless future of the garment industry in Bangladesh. Hasina as the leader of the country cannot and as a matter of fact did not agree to the gloomy picture of the garment manufacturing environment industry as projected by Ammanpour as that would jeopardize Bangladesh's trade prospects. She had to be positive and prove herself to be a patriot. Admittedly Bangladesh or for that matter any other garment exporting country has not done enough to improve the quality of the garment workers, but there is also not denying the fact that the rich importing countries also have not had their fair share in the matter. Hasina courageously alluded to this undesirable fact. This will probably anger big brothers. That way she risked her future prospect as the leader of the country. This is not the first time. She has done it before also. Some one is doing the bookkeeping no doubt.

Ammanpour is a savvy journalist and she did ask the right questions. When you are answering such pointed questions, you should not bring examples from other countries why they have not this or that. As a Prime minister, she should take the responsibility for the disaster and make sure that it does not happen again. I would say Prime minister did not perform very well. It could be due to her uneasiness with the language.

I am sure any idiot knows what is going in the name of cheap clothes. West want cheap clothes and factory owners want biggest margin of profits on their invested dollar. That is the problem and it was not touched at all. At least, not in details as I could see.

In regards to Pope's comment, I must say that he should be talking to his client countries rather going after the slave labor. The Bangladeshi labor is basically a weak hostage with not rights to protest. If this Papa, Pope really cares about the labor, he should start sharing some of huge Catholic wealth for the poor of Asia and South America. It is easy to talk than walking the walk. I am not sure how long we have put up with another Jesuit clown.

Hi, I find Honourable Hasina's conversation interesting, because she handled the questions quite nicely. A PM alone can not do and she can not answer several things in yes/no format, what reporters want. When CNN blame, Government of Bangladesh for corruption, why do they not ask USA to stop exploiting other countries. Why should Bangladesh be accountable to USA for answering the state of labour rights in their country? In connection to Honourable Mamata, I think we have to understand that thinking and articulating the thinking goes hand by hand. Somehow in our education, we do not connect this aspect and do not prepare people to reflect on their own thinking. One more problem is we start relying too much on our common sense understanding in solving social and political problems. I think this speech of Mamata madam forced us to revisit these aspects. I am giving some links of Navjot Singh Sidhu's debate in Parliament. I found these debates interesting. These are with different tone but entertaining.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lUPLbKBXSms http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RqN3GOCH270 With best regards, Saurav

I do not think Hasina was hilarious. She did not have a particularly good position to sit in. She could not just admit the truth that her country was corrupt to the core, including most people who run her own government. For a really hilarious one, see the Mamata Banerjee video:
