According to BD press, Sujata did not hide her preferred government in Bangladesh. She is trying to get Ershad back into the "Hurdle less" election. According to a journalist Ershad had good relations with Indians for decades and she is trying to cash in by asking him to get back. Instead of one pony shows, she wants at least a chicken fighting the pony (So India can call it democratic election).

It was immoral of BNP to play hardball with election when they were in power and it is biting them back in the rear end today. Unfortunately our innocent people are paying a HEAVY price in this "Game" and our promise of becoming a model state is facing a HUGE hurdle.

I still feel that our mainstream population are neither violent nor communal but our politicians have been portraying a distorted narrative to the world of our liberal nation.

As far as India is concern, it does not have good relation with any of her neighbors. Maldives, Nepal and Bhutan are very dependent on India for day to day survival but India is not liked by citizens of these countries.

Indian politicians are not as "Seasoned" as they appear to average Bangladeshi population. All of us have our strength and weaknesses. We just do not know how to approach them to extract a win win formula out of them.

Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman took help from India during our war of liberation and he was one of those rare politicians who was able to  force (Via USA) Indian army to leave our soil. [ Source: Nixon papers ]

Today our politicians are politicians by inheritance and do not know how to make deals while keeping our dignity intact.

As I said before both Ziaur Rahman and Sheikh Mujibur Rahman made many mistakes but they made lasting contributions to our country as well.

Sadly our leaders are eager to compromise when dealing with foreign nations but absolutely refuse to show some compromise to strengthen our democratic process. Just a tiny bit of vision can unleash our potential as a nation. Let us hope they realize it before it is too late.

Shalom!

The reason majority of Bangladeshis don't trust India is because India never delivers according to its promise. 'Berubari' is an example. It took Berubari and never delivered the 'three bigha' in return. India's handling of Sikim and Hyderabad is not unknown to Bangladeshis.
As far as I know this election time government should do the basic administritive work during election. Why are they entertaining all these high level delegations from India?

Dr. Rahman,

I heard the phrase - resolve your issues amicably by working together - from my parents and elders, but never seem to work in my personal life. I can't recall, at this time, that - any dispute between countries ever got settled permanently by negotiations also.

As you know, majority of our population do not trust India; that a reality. Under that condition, any negotiated solution will be dealt with skepticism. In fact, skeptics have already started their skepticism over the diplomatic negotiations even before the arrival of the Indian counter parts. India cannot do anything about it.

Let's say - India gives more than we ask for. Do you think skeptics will be happy? Not at all; it will even increase their skepticism. They will say - India is trying to buy our sympathy, we must resist. So, I say - get whatever you can get out of this negotiation, and shut up. That's all we deserve.

I fully agree with QR that neighbours like Bangladesh and India should work together amicably and equally to sort out regional problems. But I fear that novice Bangladeshi negotiators and diplomats will have little or no chance when dealing with seasoned and experienced diplomat like Sujata. It is going to be a dual of unequals.

It is an interesting article.

However I cannot blame India for trying to look after her interest. I have serious concern about spineless Bangladeshi leaders who do not treat his/her won people with due dignity but ready to beg for favors from foreign masters.

If we have good negotiators, we can deal with Sujata as well.

India and Bangladesh are neighbors and it is best for BOTH of us to have a honorable and trusting relationship with each other. We live in a world when countries are working in SAME platform to tackle regional challenges, so we should NOT fear India but should seek a significant working relationship with it.

Shalom!
