This is not a strong warning ... it could be, if USA had clearly stated that it won't recognize the govt formed by Jan 5 election. I do not understand where/why the hesitation is. Even a clear question was asked by a journalist on the result of the Jan 5 election, and the deputy spokesperson did not have a good answer.... frustrating...

ওয়াশিংটন: যুক্তরাষ্ট্র সরকার বলেছে, অবাধ, স্বচ্ছ ও বিশ্বাসযোগ্য নির্বাচন অনুষ্ঠানে সরকার কোনো পদক্ষেপ নেয়নি। স্পষ্টতই এটা কোনো শুভ লক্ষণ নয়।
শুক্রবার পররাষ্ট্র মন্ত্রণালয়ের ব্রিফিংয়ে এই মন্তব্য করেন ডেপুটি স্পোকপারসন মেরি হার্ফ।
একতরফা নির্বাচনে নিয়ে এই প্রথম যুক্তরাষ্ট্র সরকারের পক্ষ থেকে এমন কঠোর হুঁশিয়ারি উচ্চারণ করা হলো।
যুক্তরাষ্ট্র প্রথম থেকেই বাংলাদেশে সব দলের অংশগ্রহণে নির্বাচনের দাবি জানিয়ে আসছে। এ নিয়ে আওয়ামী লীগ সরকারের সঙ্গে দেশটির চরম টানাপড়েন চলছে বলে কূটনৈতিক সূত্রের খবর।
শুক্রবার প্রশ্নোত্তর পর্বে একজন সাংবাদিক জানতে চান, 'বাংলাদেশের প্রধান বিরোধী দলগুলো নির্বাচন বর্জন করায় অর্ধেকের বেশি আসনে বিনা ভোটে জয়ী হয়েছেন। কাজেই এই নির্বাচনের ফলাফলকে আপনারা স্বীকৃতি দিবেন কিনা?'
জবাবে মেরি হার্ফ বলেন, 'নির্বাচনের ফলাফল নিয়ে আমরা কি বলব তা এখনই বলতে চাই না। তবে আমি আগেই স্পষ্ট করে বলেছি যে, তারা (সরকার) অবাধ, স্বচ্ছ ও বিশ্বাসযোগ্য নির্বাচনের জন্য কোনো পদক্ষেপ নেয়নি। কাজেই স্পষ্টতই এটা কোনো শুভ লক্ষণ নয়।'
তিনি 'তবে নির্বাচনের ফলাফল নিয়ে আমরা পরে কী মূল্যায়ন করব তা আগেই বলতে চাই না।'
বাংলাদেশের বর্তমান পরিস্থিতি সম্পর্কে মার্কিন সরকারের মূল্যায়ন জানতে চাইলে মেরি হার্ফ বলেন, 'চলতি সপ্তাহের নির্বাচনে আমরা কোনো পর্যবেক্ষক পাঠাচ্ছি না। আমরা হতাশ যে প্রধান রাজনৈতিক দলগুলো অবাধ, স্বচ্ছ ও বিশ্বাসযোগ্য নির্বাচনের জন্য এখনো ঐকমত্যে পৌছাতে পারেনি।'
তিনি বলেন, 'অবশ্যই আমরা পরিস্থিতির দিকে নজর রাখছি এবং প্রয়োজন অনুসারে জড়িত হচ্ছি।'
মেরি হার্ফ বলেন, গঠনমূলক সংলাপের প্রয়োজনীতা এখন চার গুণ বেড়েছে। অবাধ, স্বচ্ছ ও বিশ্বাসযোগ্য নির্বাচনের জন্য তাদের একটি পন্থা বের করা দরকার। তবে সহিংসতা গ্রহনযোগ্য নয়। কারণ তা গণতান্ত্রিক প্রক্রিয়াকে ধ্বংস করে।
