[mukto-mona] To Prof Kamal Das

Prof. Das

1. Re: Tablighi Jamaat
I still maintain that Tablighi Jamaat is not a political organization. It is an independent organization with no connection with Deoband. One Deobandi Ulema, however, started it. But as I mentioned earlier, many political figures associated themselves with this. Bangladesh's ex-President Ziaur Rahman and India's ex-President Zakir Hussein were among them. I reproduce some evidences below. Links are there. You may want to do more research.
"Graham E. Fuller, a former CIA official and an expert on Islam, (author of The Future of Political Islam) characterized Tablighi Jamaat as a "peaceful and apolitical preaching-to-the-people movement." Barbara Metcalf, a University of California scholar of South Asian Islam, called Tablighi Jamaat "an apolitical, quietist movement of internal grassroots missionary renewal" and compared its activities to the efforts to reshape individual lives by Alcoholics Anonymous. Olivier Roy, a prominent authority on Islam at Paris's prestigious Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique, described Tablighi Jamaat as "completely apolitical and law abiding."

2. Re: Vedavyasa and Manu
Probably you have misunderstood me. I sincerely appreciate your progressive views about religions in general. I just wanted to point out that you have double standard. When it comes to casteism you endorse the views of Vedavyasa. I am sure you defy Manu's Smriti because of its orthodox outlook. This is how it should be. Since you cannot make people quit religion (you may try with your close family members and see the reactions) altogether, you have to present them with a modern version through acceptance, rejection, and reinterpretation. You yourself are doing it with respect to casteism. But when it comes to Islam, you seem to be unwilling to accept the reinterpretations by many Islamic scholars. Is it not double standard?
