Re: [mukto-mona] For publication: Shabag and emerging questions ...

What is this? A very sensible gentleman apologizing! For what?

I fully endorse Mr. Some's thoughts, including the following two concluding paragraphs:

"A binary approach in revolution and towards the system would lead to create similar power relationships and eventually end up with the same oppressive situation. Shahbag shows enthusiasm and willingness to demand justice from judiciary. Shahbag re-affirmed the peoples' power. Shahbag proved that people are rising in this subcontinent. At the same time it poses questions about its own motive and goal. Did Shahbag succeed by awarding capital punishments to the victims? Is it a failure or a success for Bangladesh as a democratic country? By doing this, is Bangladesh moving towards becoming an egalitarian state?

Finally, are Shahbag participants are willing to sustain their movement for a just society and start practicing a sustainable livelihood? Will the next Shahbag echo M. K. Gandhi's famous statement "An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind."?"

It is too unfortunate that people who committed crimes against humanity in 1971 were not put on trial before August 1975. That was more than three and a half years of the country's independence. No heinous criminal should have been forgiven without a trial. I actually do not call that forgiving; I call that tolerating the crimes. Those criminals should have been tried expeditiously then and sentenced appropriately; and if they begged for forgiveness, it would have been gracious of the nation to commute the sentences of some of them, and to forgive some of them. Now, this symbolic trial by itself is not going to cleanse the nation. The nation needs to be serious about being a truly secular democracy now. That would be hugely more important than hanging a few old criminals who would otherwise die of natural causes in the near future any way.

Dear Sir,I do agree that my writing was not derived from reality of the situation. It is constructed from media news and contextualising the event with contemporary Indian situation. I am neither a sociologist nor a hardcore activist. It is good that my writing has reflected my ignorance. At least writing could not misguided you about my actual ability.I also do not dare to make any theories for people. I have only expressed my confusion and opinion about the Shahbag movement. I had no intention to hurt your sentiments. I believe that you will accept my apology.Thanking you. With best regards,Saurav

At best, Mr. Some is a good naive lecturer without having a faintest idea what has really gone on in Bangladesh for last forty two years. His family left Bangladesh because they could not stand the heat of being persecuted. He and his family feel safer in India and yet he wants to aim for some undefined  utopian system that ever to exist in any place of the world, let alone in most densely populated areas in the world. And now that he has seen enough of Indian problems, he figured out some new theories for us. I thank him for his theories.
My simple advice for this gentleman would be is to take a sabbatical to visit his forefathers' land and get to know the ground reality. It would be interesting to see whether he could live side by side with these blood thirsty butchers with his Gandhian mentality.

The last but not the least is about his naivety about Shahbag. Shahbag is basically a show of force. People' demand of death penalty is rather a metaphor for justice than real decapitation of the criminals. The judges know that language very well and they are totally equipped to keep their cool and deliver the verdicts. Mr. Some should have respect for those judges for their judicious minds! They know exactly where to draw the line.

Mr. Sourav,
Unfortunately, you have mixed up too many issues in your write up. It is hard to understand what you are trying to say. In some parts you appeared to be supportive of Sahbag movement, in other parts - you are not sure. You are confused. You need to find your conviction going forward. And achieve one at a time; don't try to dwell on too many things at once; nothing will get done. Sahbag movement is only about one issue, and that is - to demand due punishment for the war criminals. Don't get bogged down into thinking - if this movement will bring the world peace or not.
Oh, yes, don't listen or follow too much quotes from the past. Most of them are outdated. Those are quotes from the bygone days; time has changed. Be practical; otherwise, you will lose.
You quoted – Gandhi; let me ask you - what would you do if someone wants to take your eye out? If you start feeling for attacker's eye – you will lose your own. You seem to be young, but timid-hearted. Do you know why? Your liberal upbringing – that's why. Get the utopian communist ideology out of your head as soon as you can; it won't work in this world - try that in the heaven.
