'Quran burned in Jamaat rage'

Activists of the Jamaat-e-Islami did not even spare Islam's holy book, the Quran, when it attacked several houses in Palashbarhi after its leader Abdul Quader Molla was hanged last December.

The mayhem had started on Dec 10 after the government said Molla would be executed in the same night for his anti-national role during Bangladesh's Liberation War.

Jamaat activists had first torched the house of Gaibandha's Palashbarhi Upazila Juba League unit General Secretary Golam Sarwar Biplob.

However, Molla's execution was halted for the day at the order of a chamber judge. The 'Butcher of Mirpur' – as Molla was known during the War – was finally hanged on Dec 12.

The Ganajagaran Mancha activists, during its Thakurgaon road march in protest against communal violence, visited Biplob's house. A copy of the Quran was seen lying amidst the ruins.

Biplob said his family had been living in a nearby rented house after his house was razed by the marauding Jamaat activists.

His wife Jannatul Ferdous recalled the day with horror.

She said she was at home on Dec 10 watching TV with their child. A TV station was running a scroll about Molla's execution.

Suddenly, there was commotion in front of her house, she said. As Ferdous looked on, several men, armed with crude weapons, barged into her house.

"I was trembling in fear. They said, 'get out, otherwise we will set everything along with you on fire'. I rushed out of the house with my child through the backdoor.

"They burned everything. We had bought a new television, it was burned too," she continued.

"I couldn't salvage anything. They had torched the house and everything in it. Even the Quran was not spared by the Jamaat," she recalled.

Meanwhile, Ganajagaran Mancha activists also visited the burnt house of Upazila JaSaD President Md Nuruzzaman Prodhan when the road march was crossing Palashbarhi.
