Re: [mukto-mona]

I agree with Dr. Das, "Distortion of facts has made us butt of jokes across the world." As I wrote many times in different words, it is not honorable to exaggerate the number of victims to try to gain sympathy from the world, or to show that our people can give life for independence. The combination of not being serious about punishing the criminals and exaggeration of the number of victims is just about the most dishonorable mindset. One has to be extremely stupid to feel proud of being from the nation of Bangladesh.

Of course, Dr. Roy's 100 million refugee figure was a slip of pen, and he corrected it. No harm done there.

As for the 3 million victim figure, I think the nation needs to stop repeating it. Doing a survey after 43 years of the occurrence is probably not worth it, as it would be unlikely to come up with a reliable figure. The nation can gain honorability by a) dropping all kinds of Islamic/Muslim shades from the state (as those were the basis that led to the barbaric atrocities of 1971), b) punishing the criminals, and c) avoiding Pakistan until that nation's psyche changes to realize the injustice and acts of hatred and barbarity that their leaders and soldiers committed against the people of Bangladesh.

Dr. Das,
You are right, I missed the figure by a factor of 10. I wanted to say 1 Koti = 107, which will be 10 million. One Koti refugees took shelter in India. This was the figure quoted at the time.
Thanks.

Bhutto was punished for land reform, and Shaikh was for political reforms and formation of BKSAL.  If you don't comprehend history, don't concoct it.

Red carpet welcome given to Bhutto is often seen as an insult to our great liberation war. After all Bhutto was a villain. Interestingly both Bhutto and Mujib were punished for the  'crime' of splitting Pakistan into two. While Bhutto was executed by the Pakistan army itself, Mujib was executed by 'an extension' of it.
It is also noteworthy that both Mujib and Bhutto with great promises brought an end to actual and virtual army rules in Pakistan. While Bhutto quickly surrendered to evil forces like Islamists, Mujib did not. But Mujib was struggling to do some thing good to the economy devastated by the war. One strategy he followed was to get support from countries not friendly to Soviet Union. Despite opposition from within he attended the Islamic Conference in Lahore.

Three million debate ain't over.  After assertion of such casualty, a red carpet welcome was given to Bhutto.  Nine months of liberation war could not have a comparative casualty of twenty year long Vietnam War.

I do not see any connection between going after criminal bastards and three millions deaths. Even thirty thousands would be too many. Why the numbers are so important when we do not even know the exact numbers of Razakars of that time? The deaths could be even more than three millions? Why that is not a possibility considering us being the champions of inaccuracy and impreciseness? I think three millions debate is over. Lets stick to the number and move on.

Mr Mannan,

Your endeavour to expose those "jaroj" or 'bastard' people in Bangladesh is admirable and I hope that you succeed. I am with you. But my request would be that whatever you say should be based on facts - pure and undiluted, not heresy or gossip. If you resort to massaging facts, however small, to make the case stronger, then people will reject the whole story and think that this story is one of "those".

A concrete example of "massaging facts" is Sheikh Mujibur Rahman's statement that 3 million people died in Bangladesh liberation war. Actual, impartial and evidence based account is between 30,000 and 40,000 deaths. When Sheikh Mujibur Rahman came back to Bangladesh from Pakistan in 1972, he was told by his party propagandists that 3 laks died, which was itself an exaggeration by about 10 times. Then Sheikh Mujibur Rahman at his interview with the foreign journalists stated that 3 million people died. Now Ministers, Prime Ministers etc all quote this figure and foreign journalists give a wry smile and think that these are the faces liars and cheats.
