Photos Show Destruction of Meiktila Human Rights Watch released satellite photos that showed just how many buildings were destroyed in the central Burmese town of Meiktila in March. Meiktila Before Violence (Dec. 2012): Meiktila After Violence (March 2013): The organization estimates that 828 buildings, most of them residences, were completely destroyed. At least 40 people were killed in this violence, which had Buddhist mobs targeting Burmese Muslim citizens. Burmese officials took at least three days to respond to the violence, letting the mob attacks go on without being checked. Burmese police were often involved in the attacks, stepping aside to let the violence continue or being actively involved in burning down Muslim villages and killing innocent bystanders. Villages were finally put under curfew, and many Muslims are still living as refugees and in fear for their lives. Some extremist monks have reportedly been giving anti-Muslim sermons and handing out anti-Muslim literature, fueling these attacks on an unarmed minority group. Urgent Action Needed Make phone calls to the Burmese Embassy to urge the government to treat ALL of its citizens fairly and to prosecute the extremist groups that have promoted this one-sided violence.
