"U.S. Sen. Robert Menendez (D-NJ), Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, sent letters to the leaders of Bangladesh's two main political parties, urging them to end the current deadlock, eschew street violence, and begin negotiations on a path toward free, fair, and inclusive elections. The letters also called on the leaders to reaffirm their commitment to improving labor conditions in Bangladesh's garment industry." This is a direct quote from the senator's website.
I see the letter as a punditry, which the government of Bangladesh can ignore in terms of whether Bangladesh should care about what the US or the world might say. I see the letter as a balanced one from someone whose heart has no reason to be in Bangladesh.
Obviously, the government of Bangladesh should try to do what is good for Bangladesh. I do not believe the US government would be an obstacle there. Giving in to the terrorists who have been burning people to death and making public life hell cannot be good for the country. I think the government must initiate serious legal actions against all criminals, and try its best to maintain law and order so that the country's economy can get back to the improving mode in which it has been over the last few years.
