One of the few problems we face today is that, in this age of information any ignorant person can appoint themselves as an "Author". Interestingly here one ignorant person took reference from another ignorant person (Aroj Ali Mattubbor).  Aroj Ali read a lot of books but after reading his essays I realized some of his ideas were wrong to begin with. His concept of kissing stone during hajj is one fine example of his ignorance. I'll share some information to shed some light on it.




নারীর যৌন জীবন ও যৌন অধিকার নিয়ে নারীবাদীরা সোচ্চার।'শরীর আমার সিদ্ধান্ত আমার' স্লোগান নারীর শরীরের ওপর নিজের অধিকারের দাবি। নারীর যৌন জীবন ও অধিকার কোন ধর্মেই স্বীকৃত তো নয়ই, বরং জগণ্য শব্দ ব্যবহারে ধিকৃত।নারী সংসারে পুতুলের মত। পরিবার তথা সমাজ আরোপিত কর্মই তার কর্তব্য। সে একই শরীরে বিভিন্ন সময়ে অনেক সময় একই ব্যক্তির কাছে বিভিন্নরূপে যথাযথ ভূমিকা পালনের জন্য বাধ্য। কখনও কন্যা, কখনও মাতা আর শয্যায় ভার্যা। ভার্যা হিসেবে তার কোন চাহিদা নেই। সে পুতুল। স্বামীর মনোরঞ্জনই ভার্যার একমাত্র চাওয়া, ধর্ম, কর্ম। যদিও marital rape বিষয়টি আলোচিত। অনেক দেশে এটি অপরাধ এবং এ নিয়ে আদালতে যাওয়া যায়। কিন্তু ধর্মীয় অনুশাসনে পরিচালিত সমাজে এ নিয়ে কথা বলাই অপরাধ।
আরজ আলী মাতুব্বর নারীর যৌন জীবন ও যৌন অধিকারের বিষয়টি নিয়ে ইতিবাচক ধারণা পোষন করতেন। 'হেজরল আসোয়াদ" নামে একটি কালো পাথর কাবাগৃহের দেওয়ালে গাঁথা আছে। হজ্বের প্রক্রিয়ার অংশ হিসেবে হাজীগণকে অন্য অনেক নিয়মের মত ঐ পাথরে চুমা দিতে হয়। উনি তার প্রশ্ন করেছেন,'হাজীগণকে ঐ পাথরখানায় সম্মানের সাথে চুম্বন করিতে হয়। পিতা-মাতা স্নেহবশে শিশুদের মুখ চুম্বন করে এবং প্রেমাসক্তিবশে স্বামী-স্ত্রী পরস্পরের মুখ চুম্বন করিয়ে থাকে। যাহাকে চুম্বন করা হয়, তাহার মমতাবোধ বা সুখানুভূতি থাকা আবশ্যক। যাহার মমতাবোধ বা সুখানুভূতি নাই, তাহাকে চুম্বন করার কোন মূল্য থাকিতে পারে না।'হেজরল আসোয়াদ"চেতনাবিহীন একখন্ড নিরেট পাথর মাত্র। উহাকে চুম্বন করিবার উপকারিতা কি?" (চতুর্থ প্রস্তাব/ধর্ম বিষয়ক)।
এখানে উনি স্বামী-স্ত্রীর চুম্বন করার কথা উদাহরণ হিসেবে টানতে গিয়ে পরস্পর বিষয়টির ওপরে গুরুত্ব দিয়ে নারীর যৌন অধিকারের বিষয়টিকেই সমর্থন করেছেন। আর হেজরল আসোয়াদ নামে চেতনাবিহীন একখন্ড নিরেট পাথর প্রসঙ্গে স্বামী স্ত্রীর প্রসঙ্গ টেনে নারীকে যে সমাজ ও ধর্ম চেতনাবিহীন পাথর মনে করে এরও ইঙ্গিত দিয়েছেন।

Having been on hajj let me answer this based both on history and my own experiences.   The Black Stone - Hajar al- Aswad - is NOT mentioned in the Quran.  The Black Stone is located about five feet from the ground on the East corner of the Kaaba (this corner is known as "al-rukn al-Aswad").
While there are traditions about kissing or touching the Stone, its real significance is as marker of the point at which one starts the Tawaaf (circumambulation of the Kaaba as part of hajj or omra.)  Even the traditions which talk about kissing or touching the stone are VERY CLEAR that the Stone is JUST A STONE!

BUKHARI:
Volume 2, Book 26, Number 667: 
Narrated 'Abis bin Rabia:  Umar came near the Black Stone and kissed it and said "NO DOUBT, I KNOW THAT YOU ARE A STONE AND CAN NEITHER BENEFIT ANYONE NOR HARM ANYONE. Had I not seen Allah's Apostle kissing you I would not have kissed you."  



Volume 2, Book 26, Number 675:

Narrated Zaid bin Aslam from his father who said:  "Umar bin Al-Khattab addressed the Corner (Black Stone) saying, 'BY ALLAH! I KNOW THAT YOU ARE A STONE AND CAN NEITHER BENEFIT NOR HARM. Had I not seen the Prophet touching (and kissing) you, I would never have touched (and kissed) you.' Then he kissed it and said, 'There is no reason for us to do Ramal (in Tawaf) except that we wanted to show off before the pagans, and now Allah has destroyed them.' 'Umar added, '(Nevertheless), the Prophet did that and we do not want to leave it (i.e. Ramal).'"


MUSLIM:
Book 007, Number 2914: 
Abdullah b. Sarjis reported:  I saw the bald one, i. e. 'Umar b. Khattib (Allah be pleased with him). kissing the Stone and saying: BY ALLAH. I AM KISSING WITH FULL CONSCIOUSNESS OF THE FACT THAT YOU ARE A STONE AND THAT YOU CAN NEITHER DO ANY HARM NOR GOOD; and if I had not seen Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) kissing you. I would not have kissed you. The rest of the hadith is the same.



The Stone is not be worshipped or regarded as anything but a marker.


The Black Stone has had an interesting history during the Islamic period.  In 930 AD a ruler of Bahrain - who belonged to a branch of Ismailism known as the Karmatians - sacked Makkah and carried the Black Stone away for some 70 years until it was ransomed.

In the process, the Black Stone was cracked. It is now held together by a silver band.   The fact that Islam was able to function without the Black Stone for 70 years is one of the best illustrations that it is but a marker for Tawaaf - and NOT an object of worship.



Therefore, late Aroj Ali was wrong about kissing the stone and it is being any part of Islam. So is Gita Das be trying to make sense out of non-sense.




নারীকে সতী আর অসতী হিসেবে আখ্যায়িত করা মানবতা বিরোধী ও নারী বিদ্বেষী মনোভাবের বহিঃপ্রকাশ। এতে নারীকে অসম্মান করা হয়। অপমান করা হয়। সতী আর অসতী নারীর ধারণা যে খেলো ব্যাপার তা আরজ আলী মাতুব্বর তাঁর লেখায় ব্যক্ত করেছেন। পৌরাণিক কাহিনীর নারী চরিত্র সীতা সতী বলে আগুনে পুড়েনি এমন কাহিনী রয়েছে। শুধু মানবীই না, বা মানব দেহ মাত্রই না, দাহ্য বস্তু মাত্রই আগুনে পুড়বে।তা সতী, সৎ, অসতী বা অসৎ, জীব, জড় যা ই হোক না কেন। কাজেই নারীকে অসতী বলে আগুন দিয়ে পরীক্ষা করার ছল চাতুরির দিন শেষ। আগুনের কাছে যেমন সতী অসতী ভেদাভেদ নেই তেমন সমাজেরও এ নিয়ে বিভাজন করা বা সংজ্ঞায়িত যে উপহাসেরই কাজ তা আরজ আলী মাতুব্বরের ভাবনায় প্রস্ফুটিত। তিনি লিখেছেন,"সেকালে হিন্দুদের ধারণা ছিল যে, সতী নারী অগ্নিদগ্ধ হয় ন। তাই রাম-জায়া সীতা দেবীকে অগ্নিপরীক্ষা করা হইয়াছিল। সীতা দীর্ঘকাল রাবণের হাতে একাকিনী বন্দিনী থাকায় তাঁহার সতীত্বে সন্দেহবশত তাঁহাকে অগ্নিকুন্ডে নিক্ষেপ করা হয়। কিন্তু উহাতে নাকি তাঁহার কেশাগ্রও দগ্ধ হয় নাই। আর আজকাল দেখা যায় যে সতী বা অসতী, সকল রমণীই দগ্ধ হয়। ইহাতে মনে হয় যে, অগ্নিদেব দাহ্য পদার্থমাত্রেই দহন করে, সতী বা অসতী কাহাকেও খাতির করে না, নতুবা বর্তমানকালে সতী নারী একটিও নাই।" (পঞ্চম প্রস্তাব/'প্রকৃতি বিষয়ক')

সত্যের সন্ধান বইয়ে ষষ্ঠ প্রস্তাব পরিচ্ছেদের 'বিবিধ' নামক প্রবন্ধে আরজ আলী মাতুব্বর প্রশ্ন রেখেছেন যীশুখ্রীষ্টের পিতা কে এবং এর উত্তরও খুঁজেছেন। নিঃসন্তান সখরিয়ার ছিল অতি বৃদ্ধা স্ত্রী ইলীশাবেত যে ফেরেস্তার বর পেয়ে পুত্রের মা হন এবং পরে সখরিয়ার পালিতা ১৬ বছর বয়সী কুমারী মরিয়মও গর্ভবতী হন। আরজ আলী নির্মোহভাবে বিভিন্ন ঘটনা, পরিস্থিতি বিশ্লেষণ করে দেখিয়েছেন যে সখরিয়াই যীশুখ্রীষ্টের জন্মদাতা। কিন্তু কোথাও একটি শব্দও মরিয়মের চরিত্রের প্রতি নেতিবাচকভাবে খরচ করেননি। তিনি শুধু অলৌকিক ঘটনার গিট্টু খুলেছেন। তিনি ব্যভিচারের অপরাধে সখরিয়ার প্রাণদন্ডের উল্লেখ করেছেন। প্রসঙ্গক্রমে মহাভারতের মহর্ষি পরাশরের ঔরসে অবিবাহিতা মৎসগন্ধার গর্ভে ব্যাসদেবের জন্মের লৌকিক ঘটনার উদাহরণ দিয়েছেন।
আরজ আলী মাতুব্বরের নারী চরিত্রের প্রাসঙ্গিকতায় যে নির্মোহ ভাব তা নারীর প্রতি ইতিবাচক দৃষ্টিভঙ্গির পরিচায়ক। সাধারণত পুরুষতান্ত্রিক সমাজব্যস্থায় পরিপক্ক হওয়া মানসিকতা নারীর চরিত্র হননের সুযোগ হাতছাড়া করে না। কুমারী মাতার মত তথাকথিত রসঘন বিষয় পেয়েও তিনি কুমারী মাতার পুত্রের পিতার অনুসন্ধান করেছেন যা আমাদের এখনকার সমাজ ব্যবস্থায় অতীব প্রয়োজন।কুমারীর মায়ের দায়ের চেয়ে, তার চরিত্র বিশ্লেষণের চেয়ে অঘটনপটিয়সীর সন্ধান জরুরী।নারী আন্দোলন ঘটনার শিকার নারীর চেয়ে অঘটনগপটিয়সী পুরুষটির পরিচয় জনসন্মুখে প্রকাশের দাবি করে। আর যীশুখ্রীষ্টের জন্ম ইতিহাসের আলোচনায় আরজ আলী মাতব্বর এ কাজটিই করেছেন।

Once again, one ignorant person is commenting on wrong information shared by another ignorant person (Who apparently became famous to more ignorant people of Bangladesh). I have a book containing all published articles by late Aroj Ali. I enjoyed the fact that, he tried to be logical and analyze things rationally. Unfortunately in SOME cases (Not all) he started with wrong information and thus ended with wrong conclusions. 

Those who read Aroj Ali's articles, I like to share one fun fact of his life. After staying atheist (Since his mother passed away) all his life, he distributed his wealth as per Sharia law among his children. He kept his library but rest of done as per Islam.

This simple poor man was picked by some half-ass intellectuals from Dhaka and used to promote anti-religious sentiments. I read his life story with compassion and tried to understand his issues. His last act of distribution of property was a sign of his recognizing his rift with religion but he was too far apart and stayed on his ideals as a person. I respect him as a brave person who stood up for his belief but do not agree with his atheism. As he did not have right information in front of him. 





হজরত আদমের বাম পাজর থেকে বিবি হাওয়া সৃষ্টি বলে স্ত্রীকে স্বামীর অঙ্গজ বলা হয়। স্ত্রী স্বামীর অঙ্গজ হিসেবে অঙ্গিনী একটি বহুল বির্তকিত বিষয়।সচেতন নারী মাত্রই এ নিয়ে প্রতিবাদমুখর। আরজ আলী মাতুব্বরও এ নিয়ে রসিকতা করেছেন।"মানুষের হস্তপদাদি কোন অঙ্গ রুগ্ন হইলে উহার প্রতিকারের জন্য চিকিৎসা করান হয়।রোগ দুরারোগ্য হইলে ঐ রুগ্নাঙ্গ লইয়াই জীবন কাটাইতে হয়।রুগ্নাঙ্গ লইয়া জীবন কাটাইতে প্রাণহানির আশংকা না থাকিলে কেহ রুগ্নাঙ্গ ত্যাগ করে না। স্ত্রী যদি স্বামীর অঙ্গই হয়, তবে দূষিতা বলিয়া তাহাকে ত্যাগ করা হয় কেন? কোনরকম কায়ক্লেশে জীবনযাপন করা যায় না কি"?(ষষ্ঠ প্রস্তাব/বিবিধ)। তালাক আর বহু বিয়ের অজুহাতকে তিনি বেশ তাৎপর্যপূর্ণভাবেই উপস্থাপন করেছেন।

নারীর প্রতি এক জগণ্য অপরাধ হিল্লা প্রথা।এ প্রথা নারীর মন ও মর্যাদার ওপর আঘাত। তালাকের পর স্ত্রীকে অন্য কারও সাথে বিয়ে দিয়ে পরে ঐখান থেকে তালাক নিয়ে পুনঃবিবাহ করা হল হিল্লা প্রথার মূল বিষয়। ইসলামী এ প্রথা আইয়ূব খানের আমলে পরিবর্তন হলেও গ্রামে গঞ্জে এ বিষয়ক ফতোয়া এখনও চলমান। এ নিয়ে প্রায়শঃই পত্রিকার পাতায় খবর প্রকাশিত হয়। নারী আন্দোলন হিল্লা প্রথা নির্মূল ও প্রতিরোধে বদ্ধ পরিকর। আরজ আলী মাতুব্বরও এ ঘৃণিত প্রথাটির শিকার নারীর প্রতি সহমর্মিতা প্রকাশ করে বলেছেন, "অথচ পুনঃগ্রণযোগ্যা নির্দোষ স্ত্রীকে পুনঃগ্রহণে 'হিল্লা' প্রথার নিয়মে স্বামীর পাপের প্রায়শ্চিত্ত করিতে হয় সেই নির্দোষ স্ত্রীকেই।অপরাধী স্বামীর অর্থদন্ড, বেত্রাঘাত ইত্যাদি না-ই হউক, অন্তত তুওবা (পুনরায় পাপকর্ম না করিবার শপথ) পড়ারও বিধান নাই, আছে নিস্পাপিনী স্ত্রীর ইজ্জতহানির ব্যবস্থা। একের পাপে অন্যকে প্রায়শ্চিত্ত করিতে হয় কেন?"?(ষষ্ঠ প্রস্তাব/বিবিধ)।
তিনি এমন স্বামীকে বাগে পেলে যে নিদেন পক্ষে তওবা পড়িয়ে ছাড়তেন তা উপরের লাইনে প্রকাশিত।

নারীবাদী কে? আধুনিক মানুষ মাত্রই নারীবাদী। এ আমার নারীবাদ সম্পর্কিত সরল মন্তব্য। আধুনিক মানুষ মাত্রই নারীর প্রতি ইতিবচক মনোভাব পোষণ করে, নারী মুক্তি চায়,নারী স্বাধীনতায় বিশ্বাস করে, নারীর সম ও ন্যায্য অধিকারে সহযোগী ভূমিকা পালন করে। আরজ আলী মা্তুব্বর একজন আধুনিক মানুষ ছিলেন এবং নারীবাদী চেতনা লালনকারী ছিলেন।

We do have this problem of ignorance among Muslims of Bangladesh. So I encourage people to learn about Islam and then criticize it if you want to. Islam has given many rights to women, it is sad that, we do not know about it.
