[ALOCHONA] Re: Gen. Moeen influenced clearing Ershad of gold smuggling charges?

Dear Alochok Emanur

May I request you not to brand anybody opponent or for that matter
supporter of CTG. Inadvertently or advertently, you are not doing any
service to Bangladesh by doing that. If you thing that Mr. Chowdhury's
statement is not based on facts, come with factual evidences against
it. Instead you are talking of something which has nothing to do with
the subject matter.

[ALOCHONA] Re: Prothom -alo Cartoon and few words

After the outcry from the mollahs, I asked a friend who keeps
Prothom Alo, to show me the cartoon, and found it only mildly
amusing, and certainly not offensive. It is more or less like what
Mr. Adnan has described above, an inappropriate use of the name
Mohammad by a little kid confused by an overzealous moulvi saheb. It
reminded me of my student days abroad when I was told by a
Bangladeshi colleague doing research in the same institution, that
he felt embarrassed when his English colleagues called him by his
first name - Mohammad, which of course we never use except in
official documents. I advised him as a joke to ask his colleagues
also to say 'sallallahu alaihe wa sallam' after his name, as it was
the name of the Prophet and there is a Muslim custom of saying that
dorud whenever the Prophet's name was uttered. Our mollahs should
think about the cases of Fida Hossain , the Indian artist, creating
a problem in India by painting some Devis naked. Most Hindus quickly
came to his defense against a similar opportunistic outcry from BJP
and other fundamentalists. In the West films like Jesus Christ
Superstar, or the Last Temptation of Christ, which were less than
reverent, hit the box office.

Certainly this innocent cartoon was nowhere near the Taslima Nasreen
writings or Rushdie's Satanic Verses, or the Danish cartoons,
against which the question of deliberate attempt to incite might be
validly raised. I am quite sure this young cartoonist had absolutely
no idea it would land him in jail during this pro-Jamaat regime. The
latest news is the banning of the Eid issue of Saptahik 2000, where
a short story very similar to Humayun Azad's 'Pak sar zamin shaad
baad' was published. The principal character was unnecessarily
named Moulana Delwar Hossain. That must have incurred the wrath of
Mainul Hosein - the Jamaati in the government.

About our beloved Matiur Rahman - the Edior of Prothom Alo, friend
of the present government, I will say nothing. All Magsaysay Prizes
are rewards for serices to the West. Well, the Americans are known
to shoot down their own men too, sometimes.

Re: [ALOCHONA] Re: DU: All four charged teachers now jailed

Dear Nayabangla;

I am impressed at the depth of your knowledge of the bureaucratic politics of Dhaka University.

However, you said that, "Nim Chandra has roots elsewhere, and everybody knows that"

Could you elaborate clearly what you mean!   And your sources please!

Not every one is on the know! Speaking for myself  I am incredibly dense on this sort of thing.

Dear Alochoks

It is sad that the main two culprits who actually made arrangements
for a systematic instigation of the students remain free. One is an
ex-VC of Dhaka University, who benefited tremendously during the
Hasina regime from the very generous construction grants to DU
during her tenure, and wants her back in power asap so that he can
become a Minister in the next government. The other person, despite
belonging to the opposite "colour", was in charge of the university
during incidents, and instead of calming the students down after an
apology from Fakhruddin and the removal of the army camp from the
campus, used harsh words in the presence of students about the army
and the CTG, giving them the illusion that this government could be
brought down just by throwing stones at tanks. His motivation also
is personal ambition, no a Minister may be, but at leas a VC-ship on
a regular basis.

Nim Chandra has roots elsewhere, and everybody knows that; Sadrul is
rather simple-minded,speaking euphemistically, and does what
Khaleda's emissaries tell him to do, without thinking for himself.
Anwar, brother of Col. Taher is still angry with the army for the
death of his brother at the hand of Zia. He is so emotional that he
can hardly speak calmly on any issue. People who see the footage of
is fiery speech for the first time would not understand his mental
state.

The two real villains will get together again and try to remove VC
Faiz by creating more incidents in the campus, when it reopens. The
CTG/army is either short-sighted and cannot see beyond the obvious,
or is too wary of handling people with some popularity among a
section of teachers and students, for the wrong reason.

Re: [ALOCHONA] Prothom -alo Cartoon and few words

As I was habitually going through a myriad of news sources (both online and offline) this morning, this little story caught my attention. I am disappointed that the CTG would arrest this journalist and actually cave into the demands of these radical ideologues. You know, I feel that CTG has recently turned into a more "reactive", as opposed to a "proactive" mode. It is truly fearing riots and public unrests, more criticisms from the international community, and pressure from the fundamentalist bloc. The way CTG is acting is contrary to what it stands for, or at least what it has been preaching since it took power.

If CTG cannot guarantee freedom of speech, freedom of press, and freedom of movement, during an artificial "state of emergency", it is no different than the previous regimes. By arresting the journalist, CTG is setting a precedence that every time these fundamentalist groups demand something or ban some activities, it would do so to appease them.

While growing up, I remember taking pride in our secular culture, tolerant society, moderate religious practices, and progressive thinking. Now it feels like a distant memory, and I want my country back from these religious nut jobs. I digress...

If CTG wants to establish institutionalized democracy, it needs to stop equating free and fair elections with democracy. Free and fair election is a process, but has nothing to do with democracy. Case in point, the last regime was also elected through a relatively free election. CTG needs to release the journalist immediately, and protect the newspaper and its editor from these fundamentalist idiots. If they protesters want to rally, let them be. They also have the right to protest, no matter how ridiculous their cause may be. CTG needs to send a clear message that no one's right to free speech will be thwarted. CTG needs to practice what it is preaching.

For the faithful zealots, Mark Twain said it best in his autobiography:

"In religion and politics people's beliefs and convictions are in almost every case gotten at second-hand, and without examination, from authorities who have not themselves examined the questions at issue but have taken them at second-hand from other non-examiners, whose opinions about them were not worth a brass farthing."
Cheers,
Cyrus

Boy: Babu.
Man: Say Mohammed Babu. What's is your father's name?
Boy: X.

Boy: Mohammed cat.
It was a mistake. And after publishing this joke, the

arresting the publisher and editor. The cartoonist, a

banned all the copies of that magazines.
Next day, September 18, Prothom Alo's editor said
Sorry and begged pardon in the front page. On
September 19, same regrets and begging pardon was once

But fundamentalists did not stop. They are more

And the govt. is thinking to obey to the demand of the

[ALOCHONA] Re: Gen. Moeen influenced clearing Ershad of gold smuggling charges?

Dear Alochoks

The interesting thing about opponents of the CTG is that their
criticisms are ALWAYS based on conjecture, rumour and conspiracy
theories. They NEVER talk facts or issues or actions.

But then opponents of the CTG MUST be political activists and as we
all know they NEVER talk facts or issues or actions.

Perhaps Alochok Chowdhury would like to give us his opinion on some
of the following:

- increasing the taxation net and quadrupling tax receipts
- tackling corruption at the highest level of politics and big
business
- signing up to the UN Convention on Corruption
- implementing an electronic voters roll

All of the above of course steadfastly avoided by EVERY "elected"
government you know, Alochok Shamim's preferred masters (or should I
say madams).

Regards,

Emanur Rahman, UK

[ALOCHONA] Re: DU: All four charged teachers now jailed

[ALOCHONA] Prothom -alo Cartoon and few words

Dear Alochoks,

Probaly you all know the incident.
in Alpin, a humor supplement of daily Prothom-Alo, a
joke was published mistakenly with a innocent
intention on September 17. The Joke was:
A man: What is your name?
Boy: Babu.
Man: Say Mohammed Babu. What's is your father's name?
Boy: X.
Man: Say Mohammed X.What is that in your lap?
Boy: Mohammed cat.
It was a mistake. And after publishing this joke, the
Mawlana's started demanding banning of Prothom Alo and
arresting the publisher and editor. The cartoonist, a
freelancer youth of 20 has been arrested. Government
banned all the copies of that magazines.
Next day, September 18, Prothom Alo's editor said
Sorry and begged pardon in the front page. On
September 19, same regrets and begging pardon was once
again published in the name of the editor. And the sub
editor in charge of that section was terminated due to
carelessness.
But fundamentalists did not stop. They are more
aggressive now.
And the govt. is thinking to obey to the demand of the
fundamentalists.
Foundamentalists are keep demanding to arrest the
editor Mr. Matiur Rahman.
Matiur Rahman is a Magsaysay Award winner journalist
and an icon
of free press in our country. Ironically he is the
most strong supporter of this Govt. and it's reform
works.
We strongly demand not to harass an editor and a free
newspaper.
If Matiur Rahman can be arrested, there's nobody in
this country is not vulnerable to fundamentalist's
danger.

[ALOCHONA] Overcoming Current Economic Recession - My Article in JaiJaidin

Dear All,

The much expected anti-corruption drive has some negative impact on the economy as corruption money provided a significant portion of investment in it.  Please read my article published in JaiJaiDin on 19th September in the editorial section (http://www.jaijaidin.com/archive/2007-09-19/details.php?nid=32514  ) briefly analysing how anti-corruption drive affected economy.  The article is also available at:

It also puts forward a proposal for overcoming it by creating one million entrepreneurs.  I will highly appreciate if you kindly send your feedback on the proposal.

Best regards.

Mohaimen
