[mukto-mona] Story

Mr. Farukh Chowdhury

You have resorted to argumentum ad hominem and slander, because you
have no points or facts to support your position.... May be, that helps you to
tolerate the inner irritations you are having as Bangladesh is marching forward
towrds it's millennium goals and the dream of "Shonar Bangla"[Golden Bengal]

FYI, Mr. Ban Ki-moon has clearly said "" ...... I congratulate you Madam Prime

to prosper....."
Watch the UN webcast :

Thanks for your patience.

New York, 26 September 2014 - Secretary-General's remarks at event marking the 40th Anniversary of Bangladesh's Membership of the United Nations [as prepared for delivery]

I am delighted to join you in celebrating the 40th anniversary of Bangladesh's membership in the United Nations.

Allow me to offer a personal recollection. In 1973, as a Foreign Service officer posted in New Delhi, I was part of the team that was responsible for establishing my country's diplomatic ties with Bangladesh. When I visited for the visit time, I was deeply humbled by what I saw, because your country reminded me so much of mine at the end of the Korean War. There were so many shortages I had to tear small strips of paper for my counterpart at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for him to be able to write me a memo!

At the same time, despite the poverty, destruction and human misery there was a burning determination to build a new country.

I have made many visits since.  Each time, I have been struck by the enormous progress that has been made.

Bangladesh has built a thriving economy and made important gains towards the Millennium Development Goals.  The frugality and common purpose I witnessed 40 years ago have been driving forces in this great success. I particularly commend the work that Bangladesh has accomplished in disaster risk reduction at a time of climate change.  And of course, Bangladesh is one of the top contributors to United Nations peacekeeping.

I am pleased that the dream of "Shonar Bangla"[Golden Bengal] that Sheikh Mujibur Rahman had for his country is steadily becoming a reality.

It is a special pleasure to congratulate Bangladesh and its people for their achievements and its efforts as a dynamic UN Member State.  The United Nations and I look forward to deepening this relationship in our shared pursuit of peace, development and human rights for all.

Thank you. "

Ban Ki-moon showers praises on Hasina
BSS

Friends of Bangladesh including United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon have showered praises on Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for her invaluable contribution to world peace and security side by side with stellar development in the country.

They also lauded Sheikh Hasina for her firm stance against terrorism and militancy and achieving millennium development goals by Bangladesh in different fields.

"Your role in establishing world peace and security is praiseworthy," the UN secretary general said at a gala function marking the 40th anniversary of Bangladesh's membership to the United Nations.

Appreciating the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Ban Ki-moon says Bangladesh has made important gains in the millennium development goals

Apart from Ban Ki-moon, UN Under Secretary General Ameerah Haq, United States Assistant Secretary of State for South Asian Affairs Nisha Desai Biswal, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Gennadiy Gatilov, UK Ambassador to the United States Peter Westmacott, Senior Official of the Ministry of External Affairs of India Binod Kumar, UNDP Administrator Helen Clark and UNESCO Director General Irina Bokova also spoke on the occasion.

Appreciating the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Ban Ki-moon said Bangladesh made important gains in the millennium development goals.

"I hope that the trend of Bangladesh's development would continue under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina," he said.

"My special tribute to congratulate Bangladesh and its people for the successes the country achieved in different sectors including MDGs and disaster management," he said.

Moon said Bangladesh advanced much in establishing "Sonar Bangla" as dreamt by Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

"The picture we saw in Bangladesh in 2008 was fully different in 2011. During the period Bangladesh made stunning development," he said.

The UN secretary general also eulogised Bangladesh's firm commitment to the UN charter as well as is contribution to the UN peacekeeping mission.

Moon expressed his delight to join the function marking the 40th anniversary of Bangladesh's membership to the world body.

Reminiscing his responsibility as a junior foreign service officer when he was posted in central India, he said Bangladesh was also under his jurisdiction.

"I travelled to Bangladesh several times by Bangladesh Biman when I was posted in India from 1972-1977," he said.

US Assistant Secretary of State Nisha Desai Biswal said Bangladesh made huge progress in different fields including MDGs under the dynamic leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

"Bangladesh had been turned into a food-surplus country from a food-deficit one under your leadership," she said, adding the United States is proud as it has been a partner of development of Bangladesh.

Biswal said once Bangladesh used to seek help from other countries. "But now other countries seek help from Bangladesh," she said.

About Dhaka-Washington ties, the US assistant secretary of state said these relations are not government-to-government. "These ties are people-to-people, citizens-to-citizens and friends-to-friends."

The Russian deputy foreign minister said his country highly values the constructive role of Sheikh Hasina in establishing world peace and security.

"The uncompromising policy of Sheikh Hasina in establishing peace and security in the world has been widely recognised," he said.

He also said Sheikh Hasina's firm stance against terrorism and militancy has been acclaimed worldwide.

Recalling the deep relations between Moscow and Dhaka, Gennadiy Gatilov said: "We are happy that Bangladesh-Russia ties are on the right track."

In this connection, he mentioned that Russia always stood beside Bangladesh whenever it sought Moscow's help in the United Nations.

Highly appreciating Bangladesh's stunning uplift in different sectors including human resources development, Helen Clark said she was astonished by seeing the success.

In this connection, she recalled the visit to remote Char Kukri Mukri village of southern Bangladesh during inauguration of union information service centres.

The UNESCO director general said Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman had delivered the powerful speech at the United Nations in the history of the world body.

Through the historic speech, she said, the great leader ensured the rights of the people of Bangladesh.

At the outset of the speech, Irina Bokova greeted the audience with "Shubho Aporanho" in clear Bangla.

She said Bangladesh made tremendous development in the fields of girl child and woman education.

Ameerah Haq appreciated Bangladesh's contribution towards UN peacekeeping missions, saying that Bangladesh's peacekeepers made highest sacrifice to this end.

In this connection, the UN under secretary general recalled a guard of honour given to her by Bangladesh's women police contingent in Congo.

I did not discuss the moral ambiguities but that does not mean I am not concerned about it as much as you are. I agree with what you called political tradition having worked with the government of Bangladesh in terms of exaggerations of such issues to make the powers that be happy. But I must underline that no past government has distorted outcome of  meetings at the highest levels and have been rebutted the way it has happened with the President's meeting with the US Secretary-General, and the Prime Minister's meetings with the British Prime Minister and the UN Secretary General. In fact, i would like to stand corrected but as far as my  information goes,  no government anywhere has been  contradicted and embarrassed the way our government has been in the past couple of months for distorting its version of a highest level meetings.

This is why I was trying to figure why would our side give out such distorted statements where simple common sense should have told them that the statements would be contradicted. This is  also why i concluded tentatively as I cannot prove it that those working by the Prime Minister's side are worried about the pressure on the government on the issue of legitimacy and made these statements to make the Prime Minister happy. Still, i am flabbergasted how they could think that they could both make the Prime Minster and  hope at the same time, the hosts would not see the blatant distortions. This is not simple sycophancy  which is of course the main reason for the distortions but stupidity at its worst.

This I would like to differ with you  Ahrar that this is not part of our political tradition that you have suggested. When we worked in government, we faced even greater pressure from the military dictator HM Ershad. But we never thought that we could make distorted statements of his meetings with foreign leaders to make him happy. You know too well how he craved for recognition from foreign leaders  and governments for domestic reasons because he too suffered from the issue of legitimacy for his government. Nevertheless, we never even thought this was possible. We were not stupid or insane although under greater pressure from HM Ershad to please him that those serving the present Prime Minister are not, although under pressure they are.

Best wishes.

You seem to be arguing that this practice is being driven by the desperation to seek legitimacy at home, and an acknowledgement of the anxieties surrounding the Jan 5 electoral fiasco.  I tend to think that this is not unusual, and AL would have done exactly the same if the elections had been less controversial.  In other words, you are reading political weakness into this behavior, I am concerned about the moral ambiguities that define our political tradition.

I share your outrage, but not your conclusion.

One has to ponder why would  this government be indulging  in this game of distortion meetings of the Prime Minister and President with world leaders. First, the meeting of the President with the US Secretary General was distorted. The UN Secretary General's office then issued a statement nailing the lie that humiliated the President and the country. UN Secretary General's office never in the past did anything like this. Then the Foreign Minister distorted the meeting of the Prime Minister with David Cameron that a statement from No 10 Downing Street nailed as another lie. Now this distortion of the photo session between the US Secretary General and the Prime Minister that has again been nailed by the SG's office. Thus  a pattern is emerging of lies and distortions by those at the highest level of this government of meetings of the Prime Minister/President with foreign dignitaries. This is  extremely humiliating for every citizen of the country, irrespective of party affiliations because it demeans  Bangladesh. This also underlines that its show on impunity notwithstanding, the government is nervous and shaking inside on the issues of the January 5 elections and its legitimacy. It is desperately seeking legitimacy.
